The sprinter qualified for the Trinidadian team on June 23 when he won the silver medal in the 400-meter dash at the Sagicor National Open Track and Field Championships in Port of Spain, Trinidad. However, he and his team had to wait to see if they would be one of the 16 teams named to the Olympics by the IAAF. And on July 16 -- the deadline for teams to post times to be in the final Olympic pool of 16 nations -- the team was awarded a spot in the Games.
Waithe is the fourth former Michigan men's track and field athlete who will run in the 2008 Olympics, joining Nate Brannen (2002-05) and Kevin Sullivan (1994-98) of Canada and Nick Willis (2003-05) of New Zealand. Former Big Ten mile champion Scott MacDonald (1993-97) will serve as team manager for the Canadian track and field team.
