PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad C Fifth-year senior sprinter Stann Waithe(Towson, Md./Loch Raven HS) of the University of Michigan men's track and field team wrapped up the Sagicor National Open Track and Field Championships on Sunday (June 22) by winning the silver medal in the 400-meter dash at Hasely Crawford Stadium.
Waithe earned a career-best finish with a time of 46.75 at the annual Trinidad and Tobago national championships.
While Waithe earned a top-three finish necessary to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the 2008 Olympic Games later this summer, he is still not slated to make the trip to Beijing, China, as the team has yet to achieve the Olympic qualifying standard in the relay events.
A maximum of 16 teams qualify in each relay event based on the aggregate of the two fastest times achieved by national teams at IAAF recognized international events in the qualification period. Trinidad and Tobago currently holds the 11th-fastest time in the 4x400m relay.
Trinidad and Tobago has until July 16 to meet the Olympic standard and punch their ticket to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
