4x400 Relay Named USTFCCCA All-America

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Tuesday (June 17) that junior Andre Barnes(West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS), senior co-captain Andrew Wechter(Shelby, Ohio/Shelby HS), senior/junior Dan Harmsen(Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) and fifth-year senior Stann Waithe(Towson, Md./Loch Raven HS) of the University of Michigan men's track and field team were selected for All-America honors in recognition of their fourth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Barnes, Wechter, Harmsen and Waithe shattered the school record in the 4x400 relay twice during the outdoor championships. During the preliminaries, the quartet posted a time of 3:04.73 to finish second in their heat andbetter the school record by one second. During the relay finals the Wolverines topped their own school record with a time of 3:04.64 to finish fourth overall.
The fourth-place finish is only the third appearance in NCAA 4x400m final for the Wolverines all-time. Michigan finished third in its other two appearances (1964, 1972).
Barnes, Wechter, Harmsen and Waithe accounted for all of the Wolverines scoring during the championships, accumulating five points to finish 42nd as a team.
N O T E S
The Wolverines' fourth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay gave senior/junior Dan Harmsen and senior Andrew Wechter their first career All-America awards.
Michigan's 4x400-meter relay All-America citation is its first since 1972.
Michigan's 4x400-meter school-record relay time of 3:04.64 demolished the previous best of 3:05.73 set in 1985.
Michigan has a total of 161 outdoor All-America awards.
