SKILLMAN, N.J. -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recently announced that University of Michigan men's tennis assistant coach Sean Maymi has been named the ITA Midwest Regional Assistant Coach of the Year. It marks the first time a U-M assistant coach has received the honor since its inception in 1997.
"This award is very well deserved," said head coach Bruce Berque. "I'm glad to see that not only the people within the program that have the opportunity to work so closely with Sean recognize his contribution to the progress the team has made in the two years since his arrival in Ann Arbor."
Maymi has played an instrumental role in transforming the Wolverine program into a national contender since he arrived on campus in the summer of 2006. Michigan has recorded back-to-back 20-win campaigns and made a pair of NCAA Championship appearances during his two-year tenure, and the team's national ranking has jumped from No. 38 to No. 16. Berque and Maymi took the U-M program to new heights this past Sunday (May 11), as the Maize and Blue earned a 4-2 victory over No. 17-ranked Texas Tech to advance to the NCAA Sweet16 for the first time since 1988.
The No. 16-ranked Wolverines (20-6) will meet No. 1-ranked Virginia (30-0) in the opening round of the NCAA Team Championship on Friday (May 16) at noon CDT. The 16-team tournament will be held Friday through Tuesday (May 16-20) at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
