PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team extended its winning streak to five matches thanks to a 7-0 blanking of Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon (March 15) at the Levy Tennis Pavilion. The Wolverines (11-2) claimed a competitive doubles point before securing victories on all six singles courts to clinch their fourth straight road win.
Teaming together for the first time in their careers, junior Scott Bruckmann(Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) and sophomore Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./Lyman HS) outlasted Jeffrey Karsh and Joseph Lok by an 8-6 count at No. 2 doubles. U-M's No. 24-ranked tandem of senior Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) and sophomore George Navas(Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) clinched Michigan's 10th doubles point of the season with its 8-6 victory over Brandon O'Gara and Jason Pinsky at No. 1. Junior Andrew Mazlin(Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) and freshman Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) slipped by Justen Roth and Adam Schwartz in a tiebreaker at No. 3, 8-7(1), to improve their dual-match record to a team-best 10-2.
Navas was victorious for the fourth time in six tries at the No. 5 singles position, as he earned a straight-set win (6-1, 6-2) over Karsh at No. 5 to give the Wolverines a 2-0 advantage. Sroczynski got back on a winning track with a 7-6(5), 6-3 decision over Lok at No. 2. Madden provided the clincher with a convincing victory (6-3, 6-3) over Alex Vasin at No. 6. Madden has won eight of 10 dual matches in his first season.
Mazlin also tasted victory in his season debut at the No. 3 slot, as his 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Schwartz put U-M on top 5-0. Junior Peter Aarts(Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) moved within one victory of his first career 20-win campaign after he came back to beat O'Gara at No. 4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Aarts holds a team-best 19-5 overall singles mark in 2007-08. Maravic then completed the singles sweep for the Maize and Blue, posting a 7-6(2), 6-4 decision over Pinsky at No. 1. Maravic is three victories shy of earning his third career 20-win singles season (17-6).
