Michigan Rewind
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- On the day after Halloween, Purdue converted two trick plays -- a 65-yard fake-punt rush to set up a late touchdown and the game-winning touchdown on a hook-and-ladder play with just 26 seconds on the clock -- to down the University of Michigan football team, 48-42, on Saturday (Nov. 1) at Ross-Ade Stadium.
Trailing by seven late, Michigan drove 68 yards on 14 plays to knot it up, 42-42, with 1:20 on the clock, but Purdue quarterback Justin Siller converted passes of 18 and 20 yards to set up a hook-and-ladder for the go-ahead score. After the blocked extra point, Michigan's offense was able to move the ball to the Purdue 47 for one last shot at the end zone, but sophomore/freshman quarterback Steven Threet's (Adrian, Mich./Adrian/Georgia Tech) hail-mary pass was batted down to end Michigan's postseason bowl chances.
Michigan's offense was explosive all afternoon, building leads of 14-0 and 28-14, but Purdue ground down the U-M defense, scoring the most points (48) and gaining the most yards (522) against the Wolverine defense this season.
Michigan's offense needed just 19 seconds to score 21 of its 28 first-half points, putting sevens on the board with a 51-yard pass, a 45-yard run and a punt return for touchdown. In contrast, Purdue's offense chewed up clock in each of its scoring drives, taking 23:17 and 50 plays to rack up 48 points. Purdue had possession for nearly 15 minutes longer than Michigan, holding the ball for 37:42 in the contest.
The third quarter was particularly damaging for Michigan with Purdue outscoring U-M 14-0, outgaining the Wolverines 169-26 on offense and holding the ball for 11:50 of the quarter.
Michigan's workhorse was junior running back Brandon Minor (Richmond, Va./Varina), who rushed for a season-high 155 yards and a career-best three touchdowns to account for more than half of Michigan's offense. Minor rushed for 67 yards in the first half, including a season-long 45-yard touchdown, while also rushing for the game-tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Threet threw for 121 yards and two touchdowns, tossing a pair of TD passes in five attempts in the second quarter, connecting with senior/junior wide receiver LaTerryal Savoy (Mamou, La./Mamou) on an 11-yard score and freshman Darryl Stonum (Stafford, Texas/Dulles) on a career-long 51-yard touchdown.
Fifth-year senior defensive end Tim Jamison (Riverdale, Ill./Harvey Thornton) tied for the team lead with seven tackles, registering six in the first half.
In Purdue's first offensive possession of the game, fifth/senior linebacker John Thompson (Detroit, Mich./Crockett Technical) forced his third fumble of the season, leading to Minor's 45-yard touchdown run -- his sixth of the season -- to make it 7-0. Just over two minutes later, freshman wide receiver Martavious Odoms (Pahokee, Fla./Pahokee) scored Michigan's first special-teams touchdown of the season, returning a punt 73 yards for the score and giving U-M a 14-0 advantage.
Purdue rallied with a 62-yard drive to paydirt to cut the Michigan lead to 14-7 and a muffed Wolverine punt return deep in Michigan territory led to a second Purdue TD, tying the score at 14-14.
Freshman cornerback Boubacar Cissoko's (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical) 53-yard kickoff return set up Michigan's go-ahead touchdown -- an 11-yard pass to Savoy for his first career touchdown, making it 21-14.
Two possessions later, Threet connected on a career-long 51-yard touchdown pass on the first play, hooking up with Stonum for the freshman receiver's first career touchdown, making it 28-14. Purdue replied with an 80-yard touchdown drive to score before the half, making it 28-21.
The Boilermakers opened the second half with another methodical drive, moving 66 yards in eight plays and burning 4:39 off the clock to knot it up at 28-28. Two possessions later, Purdue took a 35-28 lead, marching 43 yards in 11 plays for the score.
Michigan responded to begin the fourth, rushing the ball on each play of a 42-yard drive, capped by Minor's second touchdown run of the game to tie it up, 35-35. Purdue responded with a score, capitalizing on a 61-yard rush on a punt fake to lead, 42-35.
Michigan knotted the contest at 42-42 with just over a minute to play, finishing its longest drive of the game on Minor's third rushing touchdown of the day, moving 68 yards on 14 plays, but Purdue followed with its game-winning drive.
The Wolverines travel to Minnesota next Saturday (Nov. 8) to take on the Gophers at noon EST in Minneapolis, Minn. The game will be televised on ESPN or ESPN2.
