ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team used a quick start to cruise past Temple 3-1 on Friday afternoon (Oct. 3) in front of 396 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. The Wolverines scored twice in the contest's opening nine minutes and added a tally early in the second half en route to their second straight home victory.
Junior Kelly Fitzpatrick(Hummelstown, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) and senior captain Sarah Wilhite(Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey HS) paced the Wolverines with multi-point efforts as Fitzpatrick notched a goal and an assist, while Wilhite extended her point streak to 10 straight games with a pair of helpers.
Freshman Bryn Bain(Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) gave Michigan the early lead -- one it never relinquished -- at the 3:13 mark, converting on the direct shot from the Wolverines' first penalty-corner opportunity of the contest. The freshman striker wound up and blasted a low shot from the top of the circle, careening the ball off the stick of a defender to sneak it just above the pads of Temple goalkeeper Erin Hanshue. Senior/junior Heather Wiley(San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) and Wilhite earned assists on the goal for the stop and the push, respectively.
The Wolverines scored again just five minutes later when senior captain Stephanie Hoyer(Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) took advantage of a flurry deep in the Owls' circle to knock in the eventual game-winning marker at 8:18. With several U-M players pressing in front of Temple's cage, Fitzpatrick, in an effort to corral the loose ball, sent a bouncing pass to Hoyer who batted it out of the air and into the near-side corner of the goal.
Fitzpatrick then picked up a goal in the second half, wrapping the Wolverines' scoring in the match with rocket shot at the 37:15 mark. Wilhite fed the ball to Fitzpatrick who carried it just inside the circle on the right side before firing a low screamer into the opposite corner of the Temple cage.
The Owls' Liz Watto spoiled Michigan's shutout bid with less than eight minutes remaining in the contest, banging in the rebound following a Temple penalty-corner opportunity to put her team on the board at the 62:13 mark.
Michigan outshot the Owls 11-4, including a 4-0 first-half differential, while corners were even at 4-4. Sophomore/freshman Christi Barwick(San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) earned the victory but faced no shots, while senior/junior Paige Pickett(Dallas, Texas/Episcopal School of Dallas) earned a pair of saves in the second half. On the other end of the field, Hanshue stopped two of Michigan's five shots on goal.
The Wolverines (5-6, 1-0 Big Ten) will close out their four-game homestand on Sunday (Oct. 5) with continued Big Ten action against No. 19 Ohio State. The conference match is slated for a 1 p.m. start at Ocker Field.
