COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sophomore Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) and junior Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team advanced to the doubles championship match at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships with two wins today (Sunday, Oct. 19) at Ohio State's Varsity Tennis Center.
It marks the second consecutive year Jung and Sroczynski, seeded No. 1 in the 64-team doubles draw, have reached the final. They will take on fifth-seeded Austen Childs and Simon Childs from Louisville for the Midwest Regional doubles title Monday afternoon.
Jung and Sroczynski opened Sunday's action with an 8-5 win over Ohio State's Balaza Novak and Michael O'Connell. Michigan had control of the match from the outset, and although the Ohio State duo took some games late in the match, Jung and Sroczynski held serve to advance.
In the semifinal round, the Wolverine tandem downed Ohio State's Justin Kronague and Matt Allare in a tiebreak, 9-8(2). Jung and Sroczynski, playing their second tiebreak match of the season, found a little momentum late in the match to pull out the win.
In singles action Sunday, Jung dropped a third-round match to Wisconsin's No. 72 Marek Michalicka, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Jung, the No. 75-ranked player in the ITA preseason rankings, moves to 6-2 this fall after reaching the third round for the second time in as many tries.
