Michigan Head Coach Bruce Berque
On his team's performance at the tournament... "I was pleased with our performance. The goal for the weekend was to play a lot of matches, that's what we were all hoping to get out of it. We wanted to get some match experience again because some of them haven't played many matches over the past several months. It was good to get them back into the flow of competition. This also gave us an opportunity to get a better look at their games and see where they were and what they need to work on to get ready for the bigger tournaments in the fall. It's one thing to watch them in practice every day, but weaknesses and areas for improvement become a lot more apparent under the pressure of match play. We were pleased with the way they competed. They all had good attitudes and many of them showed improvements in their games since we started practice a few weeks ago."
On the play of Chris Madden and David Streeter in their first collegiate tournaments... "They both did a good job. Chris won two out of four matches in singles, and three of the four were decided by super-tiebreakers. I would have preferred to see him play an entire third set out, but he was in every match. Playing in your first college match can be a little nerve wracking, but I thought they both handled it well. They're both very good competitors and I think they'll help us a lot during their careers here."
On any standout performances during the weekend... "If I had to pick one person who stood out because of their performance this weekend, it would have to be Peter Aarts for sure. He was the only one to play four and win four. He was never even close to dropping a set. He also won three out of four doubles matches. More importantly, he showed that his game seems to be at a much higher level than it was in the past couple of years. I'm real optimistic about his chances to keep improving. It's not the fact that he won, it's that he played real good tennis and competed well. I was really happy with him."
