IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team yielded a late goal en route to a 2-1 loss to Iowa Sunday afternoon (Sept. 30) at the UI Soccer Complex. The Maize and Blue tied the game at 1-1 in the 79th minute off the foot of senior Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School), but with just over seven minutes left on the clock, the Hawkeyes scored again to end the comeback attempt.
Banco scored her first goal of the season off the first career helper for freshman forward Stephanie Crawford (Novi, Mich./Novi). Junior goalkeeper Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made five stops in goal for Michigan.
The Wolverines spent most of the game trailing after Iowa scored just 13 minutes into the opening stanza. Jackie Kaeding let a long ball go from 25 yards out and it found its way to the back of the net off of a deflection to give Iowa a 1-0 advantage.
Michigan came out of the break determined to fight back, outshooting the Hawkeyes 9-4 in the second half. Banco finally converted one of those chances in the 79th minute to knot the game up at 1-1. The Wolverine senior carried the ball wide around a cluster of defenders to set up a shot she deposited in the net.
The tie did not last long, as Iowa delivered the decisive blow at 82:50. Stephanie Hyink took a cross from Kelsey Full and shot the ball from the right side of the box to give IU the 2-1 lead.
The Wolverines tried to get even once more, forcing the Iowa goalkeeper to make two saves -- one off a last-second corner kick -- in the fleeting minutes of the game. Freshman defender Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) was able to get a head on a ball from a hastily set up corner kick with less than a minute on the clock. Carron sent the ball careening off the crossbar and into the crowded box, where Iowa keeper Lindsey Boldt was able to corral the ball in the pileup.
Michigan will make its Big Ten Network debut on Thursday (Oct. 4) when it plays host to Indiana for an 8 p.m. match at the U-M Soccer Field.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On today's game... "For the entire first half, we were against the wind and we just had to deal with it and get to the second half. We got the opportunity (in the second half) and scored a nice goal. Then we got called for a foul and they scored a goal on a set piece."
On Sarah Banco's goal... "It was a pretty nice individual effort. She got the ball wide, cut it around the defender and took a touch inside the box and shot it. It was a good job."
On the last-minute corner kick... "We had everybody in the box and basically the ball was sitting there on the goal line. It was kind of like a scrum and then we got called for a foul. But it was really close (to a goal)."
