ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With a national audience watching on television, the University of Michigan women's soccer team battled back to tie Indiana, 1-1, Thursday (Oct. 4) on the U-M Soccer Field. Michigan tied the game -- which marked their debut on the Big Ten Network -- in the 53rd minute, and held on to preserve a seven game unbeaten streak in conference home openers.
Senior forward Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School) scored the game-tying marker for the Wolverines on an assist from graduate-senior defender Lindsey Cottrell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central). The Wolverine defense held Indiana without a single corner kick, and limited the Hoosiers' usually potent offense to just two shots on goal.
Indiana jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute of action off the foot of Lindsay McCarthy. After freshman defenseman Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) got in front of a Hoosier shot that headed towards the net, McCarthy collected the ricochet and put a shot on goal that was just out of the reach of junior goalkeeper Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker).
The Maize and Blue evened the match on one of its seven corner kicks on the night. After 52 minutes of play, junior midfielder Danelle Underwood (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) played an out-swinging cross to the backside of the field that connected with Cottrell. Cottrell's header rattled off the post, careening into an Indiana defender just outside the six-yard box and towards Banco. The Wolverine senior captain volleyed the bouncing ball into the middle of the net for her second goal of the season.
Both defenses held strong for the remaining time in regulation, forcing the game into overtime. Michigan had a golden opportunity to finish the game at the beginning of the second overtime on a promising chance for freshman forward Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester). Banco possessed the ball in Indiana territory and began the Wolverine's attack towards the goal. The senior slipped a pass to the right of a backtracking defender that found the feet of Bowery alone in space. Bowery took a touch towards goal and was challenged inside the 18-yard box by the Hoosiers goalkeeper. The forward played a low, driven shot that beat Indiana's keeper, but the ball slid inches wide of the right post.
The Wolverines hit the pitch again Sunday (Oct. 7) to take on No. 8 Purdue on the U-M Soccer Field. The game is set for 1 p.m.
