
Aarts, Heller, Hung Named ITA Scholar-Athletes

SKILLMAN, N.J. -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced Tuesday (August 7) that junior Peter Aarts(Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and graduated seniors Ryan Heller (2004-07) and Brian Hung (2004-07) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team were named Scholar-Athletes for the 2006-07 academic year. It marks the first career ITA Scholar-Athlete award for both Aarts and Heller, while Hung is carrying the honor for the third straight year.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
Aarts, an English major in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts, posted an overall singles record of 9-8 as a sophomore while splitting four dual matches at Nos. 5 and 6. His overall doubles record of 7-5 included a perfect 4-0 dual match mark at Nos. 2 and 3. Aarts was also selected to the Academic All-Big Ten Conference team in his second season.
Heller, who graduated from the College of Literature, Science and the Arts with a degree in psychology this past April, tallied a career-best 22-12 overall singles record as a senior. The tri-captain finished tied for the team lead in dual match singles wins (18), and he was victorious against seven of 10 league opponents. Heller, who also posted a career-high 19 doubles wins last year, was a first-time Academic All-Big Ten selection in 2006-07.
Hung, who graduated from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business with a degree in business administration in April, capped off an illustrious career with an All-America senior campaign. The tri-captain tallied his third career 20-win singles season (21-15) and teamed with senior Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) for a team-best 25-9 doubles mark and a final national ranking of No. 10 that earned the pair ITA All-America status. Hung was also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Six different U-M players have earned a total of eight ITA Scholar-Athlete awards during Bruce Berque's three seasons as head coach at Michigan.
The 2006-07 Wolverines were also named as an ITA All-Academic Team on Tuesday. In order to qualify, a team must attain a combined grade point average of 3.2 or above for the current academic year.
