Smith Seizes Gold Medal at World University Games

BANGKOK, Thailand -- Former University of Michigan women's swimmer Lindsey Smith (2003-07) clinched a gold medal in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay for the United States on Saturday night (Aug. 11) at the World University Games.

The United States never trailed in the final race, setting a new World University Games record in the process with a time of 7:57.87. Smith swam the third leg in the finals, posting a split time of 2:00.17. Joining Smith on the record-setting relay team were Kate Dwelley, Erin Reilly and Club Wolverine member Kaitlin Sandeno, who earned a gold medal in Friday's 200-meter individual medley.
Smith was the first in the pool during the preliminary round, turning in a similar result of 2:00.84. The United States clocked in at 8:03.22, setting a new Games record that lasted until the relay team's next trip into the pool.
A 10-time NCAA All-American, Smith capped off a stellar career at Michigan by being named Swimmer of the Championships at the 2007 Big Ten meet. She was a member of the Big Ten and U-M record-holding 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:28.80, 2007) and a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
