Silva Swims Into Two Finals at Pan Am Games

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Senior-to-be Valeria Silva (Lima, Peru/Alexander Von Humboldt) of the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team represented Peru at the XV Pan American Games Saturday through Sunday (July 14-22). Swimming as a part of two relay teams and one solo event, Silva advanced to the finals in two events.
Silvas lone solo event at Parque Aqutico came in the 100-meter breaststroke. Following a third place finish in the opening round (1:12.57), Silva touched the wall seventh in the semi-final race (1:15.23).

Swimming the third leg of 4 x 100-meter freestyle relay, Silva swam to an eighth place finish in the final round. For her part, Silva clocked in at 1:02.75 as part of a 4:09.68 effort from the Peru delegation.
In her final event of the competition, Silva swam to a sixth place finish Women's 4 x 100m Medley Relay. Swimming the second leg, Silva touched the wall in 1:16.50 in the event final. She shaved almost a second-and-a-half off of her preliminary time for the final.
A member of the 2004 Peruvian Olympic Team, Silva also competed for Peru earlier this summer at the FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. The rising senior claimed two national honors, including earning her first career All-America award as a member of the eighth-place 200-yard medley relay team. Silva also swam on the 12th-place 400-yard medley relay to garner All-America honorable mention.
The Pan American Games are held every four years in the year immediately preceding the Summer Olympics. This year's event features more than 5,500 athletes from 42 countries in the Americas.
