WINDSOR, Ontario -- Senior-to-be Mike Woods (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest) and graduated senior Andrew Ellerton (Sudbury, Ontario/Confederation) of the University of Michigan men's track and field team each posted a top-five finish at the 2007 RBC Canadian Track and Field Championships, held Thursday through Sunday (July 12-15) in University of Windsor Stadium.
Woods placed fifth in the 1,500-meter run Saturday afternoon with a 3:48.54 mark. Former Wolverine Kevin Sullivan (1994-98) was the event runner-up in 3:46.13, just 0.16 behind winner Ryan McKenzie (3:45.97). Woods qualified for the event final by placing third in his prelim Friday, when he clocked 3:48.71.
Ellerton finished third in Saturday's 800-meter run final with a time of 1:47.48, two and a half seconds back of winner Gary Reed (1:44.93). Ellerton, who won the NCAA outdoor 800-meter run title last month, qualified for the final by winning his prelim Friday with a 1:49.10 mark.
With his performance, Sullivan qualified for the national team that will represent Canada at the 2007 IAAF World Championships, scheduled for Aug. 25-Sept. 2 in Osaka, Japan. By finishing in the top four in his event, Ellerton is a candidate for the World Championships team but needs to meet the "A" standard of 1:45.33 by July 29 to be fully eligible for selection.
