INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-- The University of Michigan men's track and field team had athletes from the past, present and future compete in the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday through Sunday (June 20-24). The meet was held at IUPUI's Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.
Senior Michael Whitehead (East Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) took ninth place in the triple jump with a mark of 51-11 1/4. The length was Whitehead's best since he won the event title at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships with a mark of 52-11 1/2. Whitehead was 4 1/2 feet short of National Champion Aarik Wilson (55-11 3/4).
Senior Jeff Porter (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) clocked 13.80 in the first round of the 110-meter hurdles on Saturday to qualify for the event semifinal. The following day, Porter crossed the line in 13.83 to place 16th in the nation.
Former U-M star Alan Webb (2002) won the national championship in the 1,500-meter run with a meet record time of 3:34.82. Webb beat the former event record by 0.1 seconds and finished nearly a half second in front of runner-up Leonel Manzano. With the victory, Webb qualified for the USA roster for the World Outdoor Championships (Aug. 25-Sept. 2) held in Osaka, Japan.
In the USA Junior Outdoor Championships, U-M freshman Frank Shotwell (Medina, Ohio/Medina) took fifth place in the decathlon with a new personal record of 7,080 points to finish 213 points shy of Junior national champion Nick Adcock (7,293). In all, Shotwell finished in the top five of the 100-meter dash, long jump, 400-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles and discus.
There were two future Wolverines competing in the Junior events as well. Craig Forys ran in the 1,500-meter run, clocking 3:51.45 in the first round of the event to qualify for the event final.
