Wolverines 10th After Day One of Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With just 10 strokes separating the third through 10th places, the University of Michigan men's golf team found itself in the 10th spot Friday (April 27) with a 610 36-hole total at the Big Ten Championships on the Scarlet Course at OSU. The Maize and Blue opened with a 298 first-round total but fell in the second round with a 312 to put U-M in 10th.
Purdue (299-292) took advantage of strong play in the second round to sit in the first position after the first 36-holes with a 591 total. Michigan State (298-295) is two-strokes back at 593, while Minnesota (307-293) is in third at 600. Purdue's Pariya Junhasavasdikul took a three-stroke lead individually with a 141 total after rounds of 69 and 72 on the first day. Michigan State's Matt Harmon (73-71) is tied for second with Ohio State's David Vallina (70-74) with 144 totals.
Junior Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) is among the top 15 after the first 36 holes. He is tied for 13th with a 150 total. After opening with a two-over 73, Schaetzel fell into early trouble in the second round but relaxed and found a groove on the second nine to finish with a 77. Senior Kevin Dore (Dundas, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's) closed his first day among the top 20. He is tied for 19th -- one shot back of Schaetzel -- at 151. Dore opened with a 76 and closed with a 75.
Sophomore Bill Rankin (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) is tied for 39th with a 155 total after rounds of 75 and 80, while freshman Billy McKay (Grand Blanc, Mich./David Leadbetter Golf Academy) fell into trouble in the second round and is tied for 41st (156) after rounds of 74 and 82. Junior Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) closed the first day tied for 49th with a 159 total, tallying rounds of 79 and 80.
With 36-of-72 holes in the books, the Wolverines will retake the championship course for 18 more holes Saturday (April 28). Tee times are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., with teams going off No. 1 or No. 10. The Maize and Blue will be among the first group to tee off No. 10, as the Wolverines will be paired with Iowa for the third round.
