WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The No. 23-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team opened its road schedule on a winning note, soundly defeating William & Mary by a score of 6-1 on Friday night (Feb. 9) at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The win improves Michigan's season record to a perfect 6-0. After earning their fifth straight doubles sweep, the Wolverines recorded straight-set wins on five of six singles courts to run away with the team victory. U-M's 6-0 record matches the program's best start since the 2004 campaign, when the Maize and Blue opened the year with six straight home wins before falling in its road opener.
Senior Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) and sophomore Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) won for the fourth time in five matches at the No. 2 doubles position, defeating Keziel Juneau and Dominic Pagon by an 8-4 margin to give the Michigan the early leg up. Heller and Mazlin have won four straight matches and stand at 7-2 overall in 2006-07.
Carrying the team's second-longest winning streak after tonight's match is the freshman duo of George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) and Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School), which earned an 8-6 triumph over Kavi Sud and Richard Wardell at No. 3 to clinch the first team point for the Wolverines. Navas and Sroczynski are undefeated in dual match play at 4-0, and the pair has won all six of its matches in the calendar year.
Michigan's No. 2-ranked doubles team of senior Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and junior Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) secured the doubles sweep, posting an 8-5 decision over Colin O'Brien and Alexander Zuk at No. 1. The win, Hung and Maravic's eighth straight, improved the tandem's overall mark in 2006-07 to a team-best 14-2.
Navas wasted little time in putting the Wolverines ahead 2-0 in the match, shutting out Sud (6-0, 6-0) at No. 5 singles to improve his dual match season record to 3-1. Sroczynski continued to steamroll through his competition at the No. 6 spot, recording a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Wardell to provide U-M with a commanding 3-0 lead in the match. Sroczynski has won seven of the eight matches he's played in a Michigan uniform, including four straight in dual match action.
The 44th-ranked Maravic gutted out a tough first set, 7-6(5), against Juneau at No. 2, then turned his effort up a notch, closing out with a 6-2 win in the second set. Maravic's win, his sixth straight, clinched the overall team triumph for the fifth time in six matches this season. He is off to his best start ever in his U-M career, standing at a team-best 15-4 in 2006-07.
Heller and Hung followed Maravic's pattern as both earned tight tiebreaker wins in the first set before running away with the match in the second set. Heller finished off Marwan Ramadan at No. 3, 7-6(0), 6-4, to put Michigan in front 5-0, improving his dual match record to 3-1. The 59th-ranked Hung made it six straight singles wins for the Maize and Blue after dispatching O'Brien at No. 1, 7-6(2), 6-3, moving his record to 4-1 against dual match opposition.
U-M nearly pulled off the overall sweep, but Zuck was able to outlast Mazlin in a super-tiebreaker at No. 4, 6-3, 6-7(3), 1-0(6). It was Mazlin's first loss in five dual matches.
The Wolverines stay on the road to face No. 4-ranked Virginia Saturday (Feb. 10). The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
