ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Stesha Selsky (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Marymount) of the University of Michigan volleyball team was named to the ESPN The Magazine University Division Academic All-District IV Volleyball third team, announced by CoSIDA Thursday (Nov. 8).
Selsky is the third student-athlete in U-M volleyball history to receive Academic All-District honors, joining Erin Moore (2003) and Shareen Luze (1996), who each received second team honors.
A sociology major, Selsky has twice earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and is a three-time U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award honoree. She is the fourth recipient of the Donald R. Shepherd Scholarship for volleyball, awarded based in part on leadership qualities, academic success and potential for impact on society after graduation. Moore was the recipient of the Shepherd scholarship in 2002-03 and 2003-04.
Selsky ranks eighth in the nation and first in the Big Ten in digs per game (6.21), starting all 26 matches for the Wolverines at libero. She already holds the U-M career mark for digs and is third all-time in the Big Ten Conference in career digs. Selsky's 2,000 digs and counting put her in elite company. Prior to the 2007 season, just 24 Division I volleyball players had ever recorded 2,000 or more digs in a career.
She is a four-time Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Week honoree -- tying a conference record -- and has been among the top 10 diggers in the nation for the entire year.
To be nominated for Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district. District IV is made up of Division I schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
