HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- Led by 36-hole co-leader Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy), host University of Michigan assumed a five-stroke lead Monday (Nov. 5) on the first day of action at its Wolverine at Mission Inn tournament on Mission Inn Resort's El Campeon course. After grabbing a seven-stroke lead with an opening 294, U-M shaved five shots for a second-round 289 and a 36-hole total of 583, five clear of Penn State (304-284/588) and Colorado (303-285/588).
Schaetzel, a senior co-captain, rode a hot putter to a four-under-par 68 in the morning, draining four birdie putts of 12 feet or longer in a five-birdie, one-bogey round on the par-72, 6,923-yard layout. He started with birdies on the first two holes and added birdies on 9, 15 and 16 to finish as the only player under par after the first 18 holes. Schaetzel carded a 74 in the afternoon and shares the 36-hole lead with Iowa's Cole Peevler, who posted the round of the day with a seven-under 65 in the afternoon. Peevler's low round included birdies on half the holes.
Michigan's best performance of the afternoon came from junior Bill Rankin (Traverse City, Mich./Central), who birdied all three par-5s on the back nine and made a 2 on the 240-yard, par-3 12th to blister the side in 33. His one-over 36 on the front nine gave him a three-under 69, and his even-par total of 144 (75-69) has him in a three-way tie for fifth place.
Also in the top 10 after 36 holes is freshman Alexander Sitompul (Jakarta, Indonesia/Bradenton Prep), who shares ninth place after back-to-back rounds of 73 that each included three birdies and four bogeys. Senior co-captain Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) collected the only eagle of the day, holing out an 8-iron on the 431-yard 11th after hitting 3-wood off the tee. The eagle helped him to a round of 73 in the afternoon.
Among Michigan's five players competing as individuals, sophomores Billy McKay (Grand Blanc, Mich./David Leadbetter Golf Academy) and David Weisfeld (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale HS) turned in the best scorecards, each firing one round of even par. McKay had four birdies and four bogeys in his opening-round 72, while Weisfeld, making his collegiate debut, played the back nine in one under par and made three total birdies for his 72 in the afternoon.
The final round of the Wolverine at Mission Inn will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday (Nov. 6) with a shotgun start. The event is the final tournament on Michigan's fall schedule.
