ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis program and the Varsity Tennis Center will host the 2007 Big Ten Conference Singles Championship this Friday through Monday (Nov. 9-12).
The first and second rounds of the 32-player qualifying draw will be played on Friday (Nov. 9), beginning at 9 a.m. The eight players still standing qualify for the main draw. There will be an additional match for first-round losers.
The first and second rounds of the 64-player main draw are scheduled to begin Saturday (Nov. 10, 8 a.m.). The third round and quarterfinals will be played on Sunday (Nov. 11, 11:30 a.m.), and the tournament will wrap up with the semifinals and championship match on Monday (Nov. 13, 9 a.m.). There will be a consolation bracket for first and second round losers.
The Varsity Tennis Center will use its point-by-point live scoring system for each main draw match. Log on to MGoBlue.com for live scoring in addition to updated results and draws at the conclusion of each day.
Competing in the main draw for host Michigan will be senior Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija), juniors Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and Scott Bruckmann (Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephen's Episcopal School), sophomores George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School), Matt Parks (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) and Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) and freshmen Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) and Chris Madden (Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS).
The Wolverines will also enter junior Mike DePietro (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) and freshmen David Streeter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves HS) in the qualifying draw.
Michigan has hosted the tournament three times in the past five years. In 2003, top-seeded Wolverine Michael Rubin (2003-05) went 5-1 en route to a runner-up finish at the event. Last year's event saw the second-seeded Maravic win all six of his matches to claim the title. The Michigan men's tennis program has produced 21 Big Ten singles champions in its 115-year history.
Admission to this weekend's event is free of charge.
