BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In its first double-dual meet of the season, the 13th-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team knocked off a pair of ranked opponents in stunning style, downing eighth-ranked Texas, 214-156, and No. 23 Indiana, 207-163, Friday and Saturday (Nov. 2-3) at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Michigan clicked off 10 NCAA consideration times en route to the pair of victories. Hot on the heels of her Big Ten co-Swimmer of the Week laurel, senior Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) once again led the Wolverines with four individual victories -- all with NCAA 'B' times -- and a pair of relay victories. Sophomore Margaret Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) touched the wall first in two events and swam on all three U-M relay winners, turning in the fastest leg in all four relay events of any competitor on any team. Junior Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) chimed in with two individual wins, two relay titles and a triumvirate of individual consideration times.
Brunemann earned the Wolverines' first victory of the weekend on Friday, using a 4.3-second advantage over her nearest competition in the 500-yard freestyle. Her win kicked off a string of four Wolverine wins, with Mueller and Kelly finishing one-two in the 200-yard individual medley, both coming in under the NCAA 'B' standard. Kelly narrowly missed the standard in her the next race, missing the mark by seven-tenths of a second as she swam to second place behind Mueller. The foursome of junior Hannah Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter), Mueller, fifth-year senior Melissa Jaeger (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Kelly rounded out the surge and the opening session with a time of 3:43.97 in the 400-yard medley relay.
Michigan settled for three victories in the second session. Mueller earned two of those wins with consideration times in the 400-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke. Brunemann also turned in an NCAA 'B' time in the former, touching the wall just behind her teammate. Hannah Smith, Kelly, Brunemann and Mueller rounded out the first day of competition by touching the wall first in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Brunemann finished the first race of the final session of competition in a familiar place, taking the top spot in the mile for the third time this season. Brunemann and sophomore Emily Hanson (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) turned in their second consecutive one-two finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle, both coming in under the consideration time. Kelly earned win number two in the 100-yard freestyle followed by Mueller's third in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Michigan capped off an impressive weekend of swimming with its third relay victory. Kelly, Hannah Smith, freshman Natasha Moodie (Miramar, Fla./Miramar) and Brunemann cruised to a three-second margin of victory in the weekend's final pool event.
On the diving board, Caitlin Dunphy-Daly (Royal Oak, Mich./Rochester) took the the top spot in platform diving on a 196.25 score. Senior Elyse Lee (Albion, Mich./Albion) came in second on the three-meter springboard with a score of 299.0, while senior Katie Skendrovic (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) finished third in one-meter diving with a 281.35.
The Wolverines take a week off before venturing to the Texas A&M Invitational on Nov. 16-18 in College Station, Texas.
