ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team fought through a physical match to earn a 1-1 tie with Michigan State Friday (Nov. 2) on the U-M Soccer Field. The Wolverines held a 24-11 shots advantage but were unable to build on an early lead.

Freshman Amanda Bowery(Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) got Michigan's lone goal of the night while senior Lindsay Yakel(Shelby Township, Mich./Utica) and junior Madison Gates(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) chipped in a save each.

The Wolverines came out strong, generating a goal in the third minute to take a 1-0 lead. Moving the ball around the attacking third, senior Katie Bohard(Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) carried the ball deep into the corner. She put a pass to the feet of senior Sarah Banco(Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School) in the slot who tried to go far post. As the ball sailed toward the net, Bowery stormed through the Spartan defenders and used her right knee to drive the ball into the back of the net.

Michigan State got the equalizer at 55:05 to knot the game at one. Taryn Lee put a through ball to Lauren Hill on the near side. Hill drew in Gates and was able to wrap a shot around the sprawling Wolverine goalkeeper.

The remainder of the second half and into overtime saw a chippy brand of soccer that contributed to the 30 fouls and six cards doled out by the officials. After 90 minutes of play, the two teams remained tied. Despite having a two-man advantage for most of the extra time thanks to a pair of MSU red cards, Michigan could not convert and had to settle for the tie.

Michigan wraps up the 2007 campaign with a 3-9-6 record.
