ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team stands in third place in the four-team standings following Friday's (Jan. 12) day one competition of the Michigan Invitational at Canham Natatorium. U-M's 331 points trails first-place Indiana (405 points).
Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) had the lone win for the Wolverines, surpassing an NCAA 'B' mark in the 50-yard freestyle (23.20). In addition, Michigan claimed four runner-up placements.
To open the evening, Brady, Hannah Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter), Margaret Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) claimed second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:33.31) surpassing an NCAA consideration mark.
Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) and Kelly earned the second and third straight runner-up finishes, respectively. Brunemann's NCAA consideration time of 4:52.01 in the 500-yard freestyle allowed Michigan to jump to second in the team standings ahead of Notre Dame after two events. Kelly then nabbed a runner-up time in the 200-yard individual medley with a NCAA 'B' clip of 2:03.56. However, U-M fell to third for the remainder of the evening.
Michigan went 2-3 in three-meter diving behind first-place Lindsay Weigle of Indiana, who took third at the 2006 NCAA Championships in platform diving. Elyse Lee (Albion, Mich./Albion) scored highest for the Wolverines, placing second (332.55) with a season-best score. Katie Skendrovic (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) also set a new season-best mark as she came in third (280.20).
The Wolverines ran out of gas in the final event, earning fourth for their best finish in the 400-yard medley relay. The foursome of Brady, Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe), Kelly and Lindsey Smith combined for the time of 3:49.57.
U-M returns to the pool tomorrow morning for day two of the Michigan Invitational. Session one of day two begins at 9 a.m. at Canham Natatorium with session two starting at 4 p.m.

We put in our hardest training of the season this week through Wednesday night so they have done more work this week than they have all year long.
"Hannah Smiths 200 IM was excellent. The 500-yard freestyle was excellent as was the 200 freestyle. I thought Margaret Kellys 200 IM was really good. Kaitlyn Bradys 23.2 in the 50 free is right at the best she has been in in-season training since shes been at Michigan. We had a few good individual swims, but looked a bit tired in the medleys and we were just running on fumes by the time we got to the medley relay. Overall, looking at the whole week and since we have been back from Holiday training, we put in our best week of work this week."
