ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan hockey team held its annual Blue/White intrasquad game on Saturday (Sept. 30), with Team White winning 6-3 at Yost Ice Arena. Andrew Cogliano (Woodbridge, Ontario) earned first-star honors with two goals, including the game-winner, and two assists for the White team. Billy Sauer (Walworth, N.Y.) made 36 saves in the winning effort, while Kevin Porter (Northville, Mich.) led the Blue team with a goal and an assist.
The Blue team broke onto the scoreboard late in the first frame with a shorthanded tip-in by David Rohlfs (Northville, Mich.) at 17:06. Porter fed the puck to Michael Berglands-Cappo stationed just inside the blue line. Berglands-Cappo wristed a shot at the goal and Rohlfs redirected the puck between the legs of a sprawling Sauer to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Blue team.
The White team answered with a shorthanded goal of its own with one second left in the opening period to knot the score at a goal apiece. Chris Summers (Milan, Mich.) scooped up the puck in his own zone and flipped the puck ahead to Chad Kolarik (Abington, Pa.). Kolarik streaked up the left-side boards, joined by Cogliano on the two-on-one breakaway. Kolarik slipped the puck past the defender to Cogliano, who lofted it over the glove of Steve Jakiel (Santa Clarita, Calif.) for the shorthanded tally at 19:59.
The back-and-forth scoring continued in the second period when the White team took the lead on a Steve Kampfer (Jackson, Mich.) slap shot at 13:23. Cogliano took a pass from Matt Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and slipped the puck to Kampfer at the blue line. Kampfer wound up and rifled a shot down the slot that beat Mike Mayhew (Owatonna, Minn.) to put the White team up 2-1.
The Blue team evened the scored again at 16:51 when Tim Miller (Davisburg, Mich.) backhanded a shot past Sauer. Jason Bailey (Nepean, Ontario) slid the puck to Travis Turnbull (Chesterfield, Mo.), who carried it into the zone and laced the puck through the defense to Miller. Miller corralled the pass in the left faceoff circle and skated past Sauer before lifting a shot over Sauer's outstretched glove to knot the score at 2-2.
The lead was recaptured by the White team just 1:25 later. Anthony Ciraulo (Clinton Township, Mich.) gobbled up a pass from Brandon Naurato (Livonia, Mich.) and slid it to Hunwick in the slot. Hunwick's shot shattered his stick but still managed to find the back of the net at 18:16 to put the Blue team ahead 3-2 going into the second intermission.
A goal by Porter tied the game once more at 5:25 of the third period. T.J. Hensick (Howell, Mich.) fed Porter's tally to pull the Blue team even with three goals.
The White team retook a lead that it would not relinquish on Cogliano's second goal of the night at 6:45 of the third period. Brian Lebler (Penticton, B.C.) passed the puck to Kolarik, who relayed it on to Cogliano. Cogliano took the puck in the right faceoff circle and slapped a shot that got through Mayhew's pads to give the White team the 4-3 lead.
The White team added to its lead midway through the final period. Cogliano dropped a pass back to Hunwick just outside the left faceoff circle. Hunwick's initial shot was stopped by Mayhew, but Kolarik chipped at the rebound until it found the back of the net at 11:22, giving the White team a 5-3 cushion.
At 13:56 of the third period, the White team pulled out to a 6-3 lead. Ciraulo's cross-ice pass was grabbed by Naurato, who flicked the puck at the net and beat Mayhew stick side.
Next weekend the Wolverines complete their exhibition schedule with home games against Waterloo (Ontario) and the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18 Team. U-M faces Waterloo on Friday (Oct. 6) at 7:35 p.m. After a day off, Michigan will play the Ann Arbor-based U.S. NTDP U-18 Team. Regular-season play commences on Friday, Oct. 13, against Alabama-Hunstville.
