EAST LASNING, Mich. -- With the medalist runner-up showing from senior Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS), the University of Michigan women's golf team opened its season with a solid fourth-place showing at the Lady Northern Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 16-17) at Forest Akers West Course.
With 10 Big Ten teams among the 12-team field, Michigan battled back and forth among the top five all tournament long and preserved an upper-tier finish with a 904 54-hole total after team totals of 303 and 298 during Saturday's 36-hole day and a second 303 in the final round today. Host Michigan State took the early lead on its home course and never looked back, winning by nine strokes with an 889 total. Northwestern (300-299-299) was second at 898 and Ohio State (308-293-301) was third at 902.
Leading the Wolverines all weekend long was Broderick, who just missed winning her second career title at Forest Akers, as she tied for the individual runner-up spot with a three-over 219 tournament total. After opening with a two-over 74 in the first round, she caught fire in the second round, closing with a one-under 71 to put her in a tie for second after 36 holes. In that second round, she posted 13 pars and three birdies for her best single-round total since posting a 71 in the second round of the 2006 Rio Verde Classic (March 2-4), which was six tournaments ago.
In the final round, Broderick battled with eventual tournament medalist Tara Delaney of Kent State and closed with her second two-over 74 to give her a 219 total, tying her with Indiana's Kellye Belcher, who mirrored Broderick's rounds of 74, 71 and 74. Delaney held off any charges to win with a 215 total after rounds of 72, 70 and 73.
Senior Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary) had another consistent tournament as she tied for fifth with a 223 total. After a 78 in the first round, she rallied in the second with an even-par 72 and she closed with a one-over 73 to nab her fourth career top-five finish.
In her first collegiate tournament freshman Ashley Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) played like a veteran as she earned a top-20 finish with a 228 total, giving her a tie for 17th. Bauer shot 76 and 78 on Saturday and closed with a two-over 74 in Sunday's final round.
Other Wolverines in the opening tournament included: junior Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS), tied for 37th with a 235 total (75-77-83); junior Isabelle Gendreau (St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec/Saint Andrew's School), tied for 61st with a 248 total (86-80-82); and senior/junior Julie Inwood (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS), tied for 67th with a 251 total (86-83-82).
The Wolverines return to competition Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1, when they host the 2006 Wolverine Invitational at the U-M Golf Course. The Maize and Blue will look to defend its 2005 team title during the 54-hole tournament featuring a 10-team field.
