CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team scored two goals in the final two minutes of an exhibition match to battle the Cincinnati Bearcats to a 4-4 tie on Sunday (Aug. 20) at Gettler Stadium.
Freshman Mauro Fuzetti (Houston, Texas/Stratford) netted the equalizer in the 90th minute, scoring in traffic from 12 yards out to erase a two-goal deficit. The game-tying goal was forced after sophomore Steve Bonnell (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Detroit Country Day) challenged Cincinnati goalkeeper Mike Vessells with a header, popping the ball out into play. Fuzetti scored with four defenders around him, volleying the ball into the net from 12 yards out.
Fuzetti's goal came 1:10 after sophomore Jake Stacy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) scored his second goal of the match. Stacy netted his second marker when sophomore Santos Perez (Troy, Mich./Athens) set up a counterattack, allowing Stacy to blast from 22 yards a laser that ricocheted off the left post and beat the Cincy keeper in the top left corner. The goals by Fuzetti and Stacy erased a 4-2 score after Cincinnati scored four unanswered goals.
The Wolverines got off to a 2-0 lead, with junior Michael Parke (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) netting the first goal of the game in the 40th minute, on an assist from fellow junior Tolu Olowolafe (Bear, Del./Glasglow).
Stacy netted the second goal of the game for the Wolverines at the 51:37 mark, giving the Maize and Blue a 2-0 lead just minutes into the second half.
Sophomore/freshman Patrick Sperry (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) made the start for the Wolverines in net, grabbing four saves. The redshirt freshman keeper made all four saves in the first half of the match, forcing Cincinnati to enter halftime down 1-0.
The Wolverines begin the regular season with their home opener against St. John's on Friday (Aug. 25) at 7:30 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Field.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the first goal of the game ... "Michael Parke got a nice ball played in by Nader Jarun in the central midfield to Tolu Olowolafe. Parke was running off-ball and Tolu flipped the ball into his path, and Parke was in behind their defense where he cooly and calmy finished."
On Michigan's last two goals ... "It shows great fighting power and good fitness from our team for them to stay in it and equalize. The game-tying goal was a high ball that was played in from our left side, and Steve Bonnell went in to challenge the goalkeeper cleanly and the ball popped out and Mauro Fuzetti calmly finished with three or four defenders around. It was a great finish by Mauro from about 10 to 12 yards out. There you go, four to four."
On what U-M will take from the match ... "We saw some good things from our team, mostly offensively with our combination play in the middle and with our ability to find the third man running. Defensively, we got exposed. We had a lot of gaps between our zonal defense, there was miscommunication going to win head balls and we made some errors. Good teams and good players make you pay for that and Cincinnati did, but we were able to regroup from that."
On Jake Stacy ... "Jake Stacy was very active on the ball and has developed over the summer at a high level. All the hard work he's putting in is starting to pay off. He's a guy who doesn't need a lot of room to shoot and score and he's finding the goal."
On Alex Morisset ... "Alex Morisset, as a defensive midfielder, was really active and did a great job as a ballwinner in the back, but he picked his moments to go forward nicely. He was a calming and steadying influence in the midfield for us."
On Patrick Sperry ... "Patrick Sperry played in goal in the first half and he did a very strong job. We were stepped up a little high and they got in behind us a few times on breakaways and Sperry came up with two or three real good saves to keep us 0-0."
On Mauro Fuzetti ... "Mauro Fuzetti has a bright future ahead of him. He put a positive impact on this game, he got a clutch goal in a clutch situation with a lot of pressure on him and I think you'll see a lot more from him."
On Michael Parke ... "Michael Parke has a big engine. Last year, he played out of the back as a defender, and this year he's playing up front as a forward. He is in constant motion and is good at receiving a ball in space, and he was rewarded with a goal. If your forwards score they get more minutes and we have some good forwards."
U-M Sophomore Forward Jake Stacy
On his second goal of the game ... "I got the ball on a counterattack about 30 yards from goal and after a couple of touches I noticed no one was really stepping to me. I was even with the left post and I shot it straight and hard and it hit the post and went in."
On his first goal ... "We got fouled and the other team wasn't really paying attention on the restart. We chipped it over the defense and I just ran to it, beat one guy and put it in the left corner."
