SKILLMAN, N.J. -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced today (Thursday, Aug. 10) that University of Michigan seniors Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) were named Scholar-Athletes for the 2005-06 academic year. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at his present school for at least two semesters.
Hung is a business administration major in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business. Peretz is pursuing a general studies degree in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts.
The ITA Scholar-Athlete nomination is just one of many accolades afforded to Hung in 2005-06. In addition to receiving Academic All-Big Ten Conference and U-M Athletic Academic Achievement laurels, the co-captain was also named the team's Leadership Award recipient and Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree. A two-time Big Ten Athlete of the Week last season, Hung finished the year with overall records of 17-20 in singles and 26-11 in doubles. Hung and junior Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) put together one of the finest doubles campaigns in school history, finishing with a 26-10 record and earning U-M's first victory at the NCAA Doubles Championship since 1986. The duo ended the spring season listed at No. 19 in the ITA national rankings.
One of the most dependable players in the singles lineup during the dual match season, Peretz led the team and matched a career high with 13 wins in 2006. He went 13-6 at the No. 5 position, including victories in seven of his first nine matches.
Hung and Peretz are two of eight letterwinners returning for Michigan in 2006-07. The fall campaign kicks off Sept. 29-Oct. 1, when U-M welcomes Boise State, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and Western Michigan to the Varsity Tennis Center for the Wolverine Invitational.
