ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan senior/junior Ethan Brown (Lowell, Mass./Lowell HS), a member of the Wolverine men's cross country and track and field teams, was selected to compete in the triathlon at the World University Games, scheduled for Aug. 25-26 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

After missing the collegiate nationals with a shoulder injury, Brown opened his season with his first career International Triathlon Union (ITU) event, the Long Beach Continental Cup (June 25), which also served as the 2006 U.S. National Triathlon Championships. Brown covered the Olympic-distance course -- 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike, 10K run -- in a personal-best 1:55.06 to claim the 30th overall position and place fifth among the under-23 American competitiors. He boasted splits of 19:19 for the swim leg, 59:34 for the bike and 33:35 in the run.
The performance netted Brown, who became a member of the U.S. Under-23 Triathlon squad earlier this year, one of two discretionary slots at the World University event. Brown will compete in one more race stateside -- the ITU Bridgeport Continental Cup on Aug. 5 -- before traveling to Europe for final training preparation.
Created by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) in 1998, the World University Championships extends to 20 sports and attracts competitors from 75 different countries; the wrestling competition will field participants from 32 countries. Age limitations dictate that student-athletes must be less than a year removed from school and must be between the ages of 17 and 28. According to USA Triathlon, the purpose of the World University Games is to provide emerging collegiate athletes the opportunity to continue their athletic development by demonstrating their abilities at the highest levels of international triathlon competition.
