PRINCETON, N.J. -- Seniors Stesha Carl (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) and Ellen Tomek (Flushing, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) and junior Emily Shea (Ashfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) of the University of Michigan women's rowing team received invitations to the USRowing Under-23 selection camp on Friday (May 5). The camp will take place June 6-29 in Berkeley, Calif. At the conclusion of the camp a select group of the 20 rowers and three coxswains will move back to the USRowing headquarters in Princeton, N.J., for final selection.
Carl has been a staple of Michigan's first varsity eight for the past four seasons. She has stroked U-M's top varsity boat throughout the 2006 season, leading it to a second-place finish at the Big Ten Championships last Saturday (April 29). She earned All-Big Ten first team honors for her strong efforts. Carl also sat in the eight seat in 2004 when the first varsity eight won its event at the Big Ten Championships and earned the bronze medal at the NCAA Championships. Last summer, she competed at the 2005 World Rowing Under-23 World Championships, winning a gold medal with the U.S. four.
Shea is in her second season as a member of Michigan's first varsity eight. She rowed in the seven seat at the Big Ten Championships when Michigan's top eight captured second place last weekend. Shea has previous experience with USRowing, training with the U.S. National Junior team in the summer of 2003.
Tomek made her debut in the Michigan first varsity eight at the start of the 2006 season. She was in the third seat for the first varsity eight's runner-up finish at the Big Ten Championships a week ago. Tomek was named to the All-Big Ten second team. She began her rowing career on the Wolverine novice squad in 2003 and quickly earned a spot in the second varsity eight boat in 2004 and 2005.
The head coach for the camp will be Dave O'Neill, who heads the University of California program. The 2006 World Rowing Under-23 World Championships will take place July 20-23 in Hazewinkel, Belgium.
Carl, Shea, Tomek and the No. 6-ranked Wolverines will be in action this weekend (May 13-14) at the Aramark Central/South Region Sprints in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Michigan will be vying for its ninth consecutive bid to the NCAA Championships, which will take place May 26-28 in Camden, N.J.
