Five Overtime Tallies Lift Wolverines Over Brown Bears

Junior captain Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming West Valley) tallied five points on four goals and an assist to go along with six steals. Megan Hausmann (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's) and Julie Hyrne (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) also each had five-point games with two goals and three helpers apiece, and Kristen Davis (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park) made five saves and forced three steals in a winning effort.
Brown jumped out to a 2-0 lead to begin the contest, but Kristin Hoogenboom (Portland, Ore./Sunset) and Hyrne responded with back-to-back markers to tie it at 2-2. The tie evaporated quickly as the Bears scored twice to take a 4-2 lead into the second frame.
After another Brown tally, Hausmann scored with three minutes remaining and then again with 26 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 5-4. It looked as if Michigan was headed to the second half down only one goal despite the slow start, but Brown sank a shot into the floating canvas with just two seconds left in the half to take a 6-4 lead.
U-M woke up in the start of the third, tallying three goals to take a 7-6 lead. Sharayah Hernandez (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) began the scoring, and Kaitlin Prijatel's (North Tustin, Calif./Foothill) power-play marker tied the game. Hoogenboom's second score gave U-M a 7-6 lead, but another late-period goal by the Bears sent the game into the fourth tied 7-7.
Captains Welch and Hausmann scored back to back to begin the fourth, giving U-M a 9-7 lead halfway through the final frame. However, Brown tied the game with two goals in the final two minutes, including getting a score from 10 meters out with just three seconds remaining in the game to send it into overtime.
In overtime, Michigan stormed out of the gates. Hyrne scored 22 seconds into extra time to spark a five-goal run. Hoogenboom split two Welch tallies to put Michigan up 13-9 heading into the second overtime period. Prijatel scored the only goal in the final overtime stanza and Michigan escaped, winning 14-9.
Before heading to the Western Division Championships (April 22-23) at Indiana's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind., U-M next hosts an exhibition match this Thursday (April 13) against the Michigan State Spartans club water polo team at Canham Natatorium. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.

Megan Hausmann tallied five more points to bring her three-game weekend total in points to 17 (9 g, 8 a). Today's five-point outburst extends her point streak to six games over which she has tallied 13 goals and 12 assists.
Hausmann moved into third place in program history with 87 career assists, surpassing Jo Antonsen (2002-05), who recorded 85 in her career.
Kristin Hoogenboom came into the Brown Mini with nine goals on the season and subsequently netted nine goals in just three games this weekend, doubling her goal total for the season from nine to 18.
Shana Welch finished the weekend with 15 points (13 g, 2 a) in the three games, which extends her point streak to seven games. Welch has 33 points on 25 goals and eight assists over that span.
Welch's six steals led the team against Brown. She is the third player this season and fifth in program history to record six or more steals in a game. Hausmann set the program record yesterday by registering eight thefts against Harvard.
Julie Hyrne earned five points on two goals and three helpers to set a single-game career high in points. The freshman reached four points on three previous occasions.
This is Michigan's first overtime game since U-M's 11-10 sudden-victory win over Indiana in the Western Division Championship last season. Today's overtime triumph also moves Michigan to 6-2 all-time against the Brown Bears.

Michigan Head Coach Matt Anderson
On today's game ... "We put four goals on Brown really quick into overtime. It was outstanding to see four goals in a minute and a half. We played well in overtime and came out on fire. We probably should have been doing that the whole game, but it's hard when you tell a team to be ready for a tough game and they don't come out thinking that way, and that is what happened. Brown played very well. We were down after the first period and down at the half. It took us a while to get going and then they scored a full-court shot at the buzzer. I thought, 'Oh boy, we are going to be a little deflated,' but the reality is we came out on fire. I think the girls felt it shouldn't have gone into overtime and they responded that way."
