PINEHURST, N.C. -- With overnight rains causing unplayable conditions on and around the Centennial Pinehurst Course No. 8, the final round of the 2006 Pinehurst Intercollegiate was cancelled today (March 21) giving the University of Michigan men's golf team a 16th place finish with a 617 36-hole total. After opening with a 316 first day total on Sunday, the Maize and Blue responded and improved dropping 15-strokes with a 301 in the second round to close. That would prove to be it for the Wolverines, with weather canceling the final round.
Freshman Bill Rankin (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) closed out the 36-holes as the top Wolverine as he tied for 34th with a 152 total. After opening with a 77, he dropped two-strokes in the second and eventual final round with a three-over 75. After starting off three-over through his first six holes, his three birdies negated three bogeys during his next 12 holes as he played even par to finish the round with a 75.
Sophomore Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) tied for 47th with a 153 total. Ottenweller opened with an 81 in the first round, but came back firing in the second round as he fired his eight par or better round of the season with an even-par 72, as the two bogeys he recorded were erased by two birdies as he played two-under through his final 11 holes.
Senior Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist HS) and senior Brandon Duff (Goodrich, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) both tied for 59th with 156 totals. For Vozza he opened with an 80 and followed with a 76 in the second round, while Duff recorded back-to-back 78s. Sophomore Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) rounded out the five-man team as he tied for 90th with a 167 total (81-86).
Overall, SMU used a 291 first day team total to build a three-stroke lead and held on after a 301 in the second round to close with a 592 36-hole total to win the team title by four strokes. UAB finished as the runner-up with a 596 total (298-298), while host Indiana (294-303) was third at 597. In addition to the team title, SMU's Colt Knost used a one-under 71 and an even-par 72 to win medalist honors with a one-under 143 total. UNC Wilmington's Will Shambley was the runner-up at 144 (73-71).
The Wolverines will have a few weeks off before hitting the links again Saturday and Sunday (April 8-9) at the Boilermaker Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Kampen Course on the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.
