SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team dropped its first two games of the UCSB Gaucho Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 25) at the Rec Center Pool. No. 4-ranked Hawaii used a 5-0 first-period advantage to pull away from Michigan, handing the Wolverines a 9-2 loss. U-M rebounded with strong play against No. 13-ranked UC Irvine but could not overcome a five-goal third period by the Anteaters, losing 8-7 despite senior captain Megan Hausmann's (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's) hat trick.
In the first game of the day, Hawaii stormed out of the gates, building a 5-0 first-period lead. The difference in the game, however, came in special-teams play. U-M failed on nine man-advantage opportunities, while Hawaii connected on eight of 13 power-play chances.
Michelle Keeley (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) scored Michigan's first goal of the game 29 seconds into the second quarter to cut the lead to 5-1. Keeley turned out of two meters and finished the shot to get Michigan on the board. The Rainbow Wahine answered back later in the second and U-M went into halftime down 6-1.
Hawaii netted the only two goals of the third period to make it 8-1. Mary Chatigny (Palm Springs, Calif.) scored one minute into the final period, burying an outside shot to move the score to 8-2. Hawaii added a late tally and the game ended in a 9-2 final. Sally Stone (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's) made seven saves for the Maize and Blue in a losing effort.
In the second game of the day, Michigan bounced back and went into the second period ahead 2-1 against UC Irvine. The two teams traded goals in the second frame and the Wolverines found themselves up by a promising margin of 3-2.
Things unraveled for the Wolverines in the third period as the Anteaters reeled off five straight goals to pull ahead 7-3 at the end of the period. Sharayah Hernandez (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) began Michigan's comeback, scoring the first goal of the fourth. Hausmann, Julie Hyrne (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) and Chatigny all scored in a span of 1:48 to tie the game 7-7 with 1:30 to play. The Anteaters then scored the deciding marker with just under a minute remaining in the game and U-M failed to net the equalizer despite a good look in its final possession of the game.
The Wolverines jump back in the pool tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 26) for a morning contest against Brown at 10:20 a.m. at the Rec Center Pool. With a victory Michigan would play the winner of No. 14 UC Davis and No. 15 UC San Diego at 3 p.m., while a U-M loss would place Michigan against the loser of the UCD-UCSD contest at 4:10 p.m.

Senior Megan Hausmann moved into sole possession of fifth place in all-time goals, passing Casey Kerney (2002-04), who scored 100 goals in her career. Hausmann's hat trick in tonight's contest against California-Irvine gives her 101 career goals. Her three goals also tied a career high as she reached the hat-trick plateau for the eighth time in her career.
Senior Kristen Hoogenboom played her 100th career game against California-Irvine.
With a goal in both of today's contests, freshman Mary Chatigny has scored five goals in U-M's last three games. Chatigny's three-game goal-scoring streak is the longest current streak on the team.
The Wolverines fell to 0-7 all-time against the Rainbow Wahine and 1-2 all-time against UC Irvine.

Michigan Head Coach Matt Anderson
On the game against Hawaii ... "I told the girls before the game that we were going to be even with Hawaii in every step of the game, and the difference in the game would be who won the power-play advantage. We ended up 0-for-9 on the power play and they ended up 8-for-13 and that was the difference. In the four years that I have been here, we have never been shut out on the power play. Hawaii did a phenomenal job defensively. We outscored them in the half court 2-1 without the power plays. They obviously outscored us on the power plays."
On the game against California-Irvine ... "I thought we were playing well in the first half, but in the third period we didn't play well. We made some fundamental mistakes; bad passes and lapses on defense and California-Irvine took advantage of it. Then we retook control of the game in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, we ran out of time. They scored with a handful of seconds left. We had a final opportunity and had a good look in the final seconds, but we weren't able to get the ball to fall. I was happy with everything except that we ran out of time. We exploded for three goals in the fourth quicker than I have ever seen one of our teams do. It was phenomenal to watch. Unfortunately, we didn't get the ball back one more time. Otherwise, I was pretty confident with what we could have done."
On building off of today's games ... "What we have to take from today is the fact that we played well in the sense of competing with Hawaii except for on the power play. Against California-Irvine, we had a good three quarters. Unfortunately, we had one period that allowed them to score one more goal than we got."
