SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The No. 12 University of Michigan women's water polo team went 1-1 in the final day of the UCSB Gaucho Invitational on Sunday (Feb. 26) at the Rec Center Pool. Michigan blew out Brown 12-2 in the morning game after going 4-for-4 on the power play and killing off all eight Brown man advantages. In the 13th-place game against No. 15-ranked UC San Diego, Michigan held a 5-1 lead heading into the second half but lost the lead in the fourth quarter and fell 7-6.
In the first game of the day, Michigan jumped all over Brown early and never let up. Sharayah Hernandez (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) led the Wolverine defense with three steals, while Kristen Davis (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park) backstopped Michigan to its first victory of the tournament, making seven saves and adding three helpers.
Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming West Valley) tallied two goals to begin the contest. Welch put Michigan up 1-0 two minutes in during a half-court offensive possession and added another on the power play just over two minutes later. Wesley Ellison (Portola Valley, Calif./Palo Alto) then netted Michigan's third marker just before the first-period buzzer on a backhand shot out of two meters.
Carly Strub (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) began her hat-trick effort, scoring two minutes into the second to push the lead to 4-0. Julie Hyrne (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) scored two goals in a 42-second span from 2:48 to 2:05 to give U-M a 6-0 advantage. Hyrne's second tally came on the power play. Strub then scored again with seconds left in the half, allowing Michigan to go into halftime up 7-0.
Kristin Hoogenboom (Portland, Ore./Sunset) made it 8-0 quickly into the third on a 6-on-5 out of two meters. After a Brown goal at the end of the third, Mary Chatigny (Palm Springs, Calif./Palm Springs) put Michigan up by eight again following a natural goal to begin the fourth. Kelsey Haley (Portola Valley, Calif./Menlo) and Carrie Stover (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) also scored in the final frame, with Stover's goal coming on a four-meter penalty shot. Strub completed the hat trick with one minute remaining in the game on the power play and U-M walked away with the win.
A UC San Diego victory over UC Davis in overtime pitted Michigan against the No. 15-ranked Tritons. Michigan jumped out to a 3-1 lead over UCSD in the first period. Michelle Keeley (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) scored twice out of the two meter, and Hyrne added a late first-period goal to give Michigan the lead heading into the second.
Keeley finished the hat trick to begin the second to make it 4-1, and Hernandez finalized the first-half assault on a 6-on-5, furthering Michigan's lead to 5-1. In the third period, UC San Diego got two quick tallies in the first minute to cut U-M's lead to 5-3. Megan Hausmann (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's) gave Michigan some insurance with a four-meter goal with five minutes remaining in the third, but UC San Diego answered back to reduce the margin to 6-4 one minute later.
In the fourth, Michigan could not hold onto the lead, allowing three Triton goals in the final three minutes as the Wolverines finished the tournament 1-3.
Michigan next travels into the Rocky Mountains to take on Colorado State at 7 p.m. MST Wednesday (March 1) in Fort Collins, Colo.
