Michigan is 24-13 in the GLI semifinals and 43-29-1 overall in the tournament.
U-M has met Michigan Tech in seven straight GLIs dating back to 2000. Michigan has won the last six meetings for an all-time GLI record of 18-10-0 against the Huskies.
Michigan will be playing in its 24th GLI championship game Saturday. U-M is 11-12 in the title bout, and its 11 championships are a GLI record. Michigan is 5-4 versus Michigan State in the championship game despite losing the last four title meetings in 2004, 1999, 1998 and 1997. U-M's wins occurred in 1966, 1989, 1993, 1994 and 1995.
Matt Hunwick's second of two goals tonight was the 20th on his career, moving him into a tie for 15th place among Wolverine defensemen with Aaron Ward (1991-93). The two-point night upped his career total to 80 points, which gives Hunwick a share of 16th place with Alex Roberts (1987-90) on the U-M career list for defensemen.
With two goals on the night, Matt Hunwick leads active Wolverines in goals at the Great Lakes Invitational with three career markers in the tournament.
Matt Hunwick scored for the first time since registering two goals on March 18, 2006, against Northern Michigan in the CCHA Tournament third-place game at Joe Louis Arena. The two goals against Michigan Tech were part of his 20th career multi-point game.
Kevin Porter tacked another game onto his career-best point streak, extending the run to 16 games with a first period assist. He added another helper to generate 13-15-28 totals during the stretch. The stretch ties Andy Hilbert's streak in 2000-01 and Brendan Morrison's 1996-97 string for the longest point streak since Mike Knuble had points in 19 straight games during the 1994-95 season.
Kevin Porter tallied two assists, tying his career high for the 13th time. He has 10 multi-point games this season and 27 for his career.
Travis Turnbull extended his point streak to three games with a goal in the second period. He has 2-3-5 totals during that time.
Chad Kolarik upped his point streak to five games with an assist in the second period. Kolarik has a 1-6-7 line during the span.
With a second period helper, Morgan Ward set a new career high with four points in a season. Ward surpassed his previous high (1-2-3) set when he skated as a sophomore for Army.
Chris Summers set a career high with a +3 plus/minus rating.
Matt Hunwick's +3 rating tonight was the fourth time this season he's been +3 or better. His season high is +4 vs. Nebraska-Omaha on Nov. 10.
Billy Sauer came up one goal short of his second career shutout tonight against MTU, but he did set a team season high shutout streak of 71:01. Michigan had last yielded a goal to Notre Dame in the third period on Dec. 10. Michigan Tech stymied Michigan's shutout tonight with 1:16 left in the third period.
