U-M Uses 11 Swimming Wins to Clinch EMU Inviational

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The 10th-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team finished the weekend with 16 total wins in 20 events, including winning 11 of 13 on Saturday (Dec. 2), to win the two-day Eastern Michigan Invitational at Jones Natatorium. The Wolverines' 1,192 points put them well ahead of runner-up Eastern Michigan, which posted 879.
Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) and Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) were the top finishers on the day as each claimed two individual victories and swam on at least one winning relay.
Michigan won all seven events in the morning session and highlighted those victories with a pair of 1-2 finishes (100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly). Brady, Valeria Silva (Lima, Peru/Alexander Von Humboldt), Payton Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) and Margaret Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) started off the winning by taking first in the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.57).
Five different swimmers won the next five individual events. First it was Brunemann in the 400-yard individual medley (4:28.19). Brady and Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) followed with a win apiece -- Brady in the 100-yard butterfly (56.58) and Smith in the 200-yard freestyle with a NCAA 'B' time of 1:49.36. Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) and Johnson completed the individual streak as Mueller touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.51) and Johnson in the 100-yard backstroke (56.19).
In the final event of the morning -- the 800-yard freestyle -- the team of Hannah Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter), Susan Gilliam (Los Angeles, Calif./Bolles, Fla.), Brunemann and Lindsey Smith earned a top time of 7:29.11.
After coming in runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle in the first event of the evening session, the Wolverines reeled off six straight triumphs to cap off the weekend, including collecting three more 1-2 finishes.
Brunemann took first for the second time in the day, touching the wall in consideration fashion in the 500-yard freestyle (4:53.70). Kelly got into the action when she claimed the top time in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.22). Brady then clocked in first in the 50-yard freestyle (23.67), the final individual race of the invitational.
The quartet of Hannah Smith, Silva, Brady and Lindsey Smith combined for a mark of 3:48.68 in the 400-yard medley to wrap up the Maize and Blue victories.
Michigan's next competition comes after the New Year when it hosts the Michigan Invitational at Canham Natatorium. Friday (Jan. 12) competition begins at 6 p.m., with Saturday's (Jan. 13) events starting at 9 a.m.
