CALGARY, Alberta -- Sophomore forward Andrew Cogliano (Woodbridge, Ontario) of the University of Michigan ice hockey team was chosen to play for Team Canada at the 2007 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, head coach Craig Hartsburg announced Friday (Dec. 15). The tournament will take place Dec. 26, 2006, through Jan. 5, 2007, in Mora and Leksand, Sweden.
Cogliano
Cogliano was one of 39 participants at Hockey Canada's National Junior Selection Camp held Dec. 10-15 in Calgary. The roster was pared down today to 22 players -- 13 forwards, seven defensemen and two goalies. Cogliano won a gold medal with Canada at the 2006 IIHF World Junior Championship in Vancouver, B.C. He had a goal and four assists in last year's tournament.
For Michigan this season, Cogliano has posted a career-high 13 goals to go with 10 assists. His 23 points are fourth-best on the team. Cogliano had six goals in his last three games before leaving for Canada's selection camp.
Seven Wolverines have skated for the Canadian World Junior Team; U-M players have been part of the squad a total of 12 times. Cogliano is the fourth repeat competitor for U-M, the first since Mike Cammalleri in 2001 and 2002. Cogliano is one of three players on Team Canada's roster who play college hockey. The others are Dan Bertram (Boston College) and Jonathan Toews (North Dakota).
Cogliano and Team USA's Jack Johnson (Ann Arbor, Mich.) will be absent from No. 11 Michigan's lineup during the 42nd Great Lakes Invitational in Detroit on Dec. 29-30. U-M faces Michigan Tech at 8 p.m. on Dec. 29. Michigan will oppose either Michigan State or Harvard on Dec. 30.
