ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshmen George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) and Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team each earned a spot in the main draw of the 2006 Big Ten Conference Singles Championship after advancing through qualifying action Friday (Nov. 10) at U-M's Varsity Tennis Center.
Navas, who received a first-round bye, knocked off Minnesota's Pierre Dumas by a score of 6-0, 7-6(5) to wrap up one of eight qualifying spots in the 32-player draw.
Sroczynski had an easier time advancing to the main draw. After receiving a bye in the first round, Sroczynski was set to face Purdue's Paul Foley. Foley, however, moved into the main draw after Indiana's Paul Boskovich pulled out of the tournament. Foley's move resulted in Sroczynski earning another bye and automatically qualifiying for the main draw.
Sophomore Mike DePietro (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) and freshman Matt Parks (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) each earned a victory in the morning's opening round before falling later in the afternoon. DePietro quickly disposed of Iowa's Walker Grimes by a score of 6-3, 6-2, but exited the tournament with a tough 6-4, 7-6(4) defeat to Penn State's James Dwyer in the second round. Parks handed Michigan State's Scott Rasmussen a 6-0, 7-6(2) loss before dropping a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Penn State's Ryan Gormley.
Navas and Sroczynski will join teammates Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS), Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS), Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School), Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) and Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) in the 64-player main draw, which begins tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 11) at 8 a.m.
