ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team opened the 2006-07 season by hosting the Wolverine Invitational Friday through Sunday (Sept. 29-Oct 1) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan played six series of matches against players from Boise State, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and Western Michigan during the three-day event, finishing the weekend with a combined record of 20-14 in singles and doubles.
The first day of competition saw the Wolverines split four doubles matches with Notre Dame before winning five of eight singles matches against Vanderbilt. The marquee match-up of the day was between senior Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) and No. 28-ranked Ryan Preston. The No. 113th-ranked Heller nearly pulled the upset over the Commdores' top player, but Preston prevailed in the end by a score of 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
Michigan got off to a fast start on Saturday, sweeping all four doubles matches against Vanderbilt. U-M ran into a bit of a tougher opponent in singles action, as it was only able to take three ofeight matches away from Notre Dame in the afternoon. The day was highlighted by senior Brian Hung's (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) dominating 6-2, 6-2 victory over No. 21-ranked Stephen Bass.
The Wolverines were only able to take away one doubles victory against teams from Boise State and Western Michigan on the final day, but the Maize and Blue ended the tournament on a positive note by claiming victories in five of seven singles matches on Sunday.
Leading the way for Michigan at the Wolverine Invitational were sophomoresPeter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS), who each finished with an unblemished 3-0 record in singles. Mazlin was also victorious in all three of his doubles matches. Fellow classmates Scott Bruckmann (Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) and Mike DePietro (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) each picked up two singles wins over the weekend.
Heller, Hung and junior Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) will represent Michigan this upcoming week at the 2006 Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships, scheduled for Oct. 2-8 at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Heller and Hung will begin action in the 128-player qualifying singles draw on Monday (Oct. 2). Hung will face Oklahoma State's Nathan Byrnes at 8 a.m. CDT, while Heller will meet Washington's Daniel Chu at 3:30 p.m. CDT. For live scoring of each match, please visit Tulsa's official athletic website at www.tulsahurricane.com.
Maravic will begin competition in the 64-player main singles draw on Thursday (Oct. 5) before joining Hung in the 32-team main doubles draw later that day.
