DETROIT, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team skated to a 5-5 tie with No. 15 Michigan State on Saturday night (Jan. 28) at Joe Louis Arena. The stalemate was the fifth played out between the rivals in the last six games. Brandon Kaleniecki (Livonia, Mich.) continued his success against MSU in his career, leading the Wolverines with two goals. U-M failed to hold onto a 5-3 lead in the third, allowing two power-play goals.
Early Spartan offensive pressure drew a Jack Johnson (Ann, Arbor, Mich.) penalty at 1:18 of the first. Michigan's penalty kill came out aggressive and forced a Michigan State penalty 58 seconds later to even play.
Michigan forced another Spartan infraction 23 seconds later to gain a 4-on-3 man advantage. U-M earned a two-man advantage after Johnson's penalty expired and capitalized on it with the first goal of the game at 3:57. Chad Kolarik (Abbington, Pa.) gave the puck to T.J. Hensick (Howell, Mich.) at the left faceoff circle, who sent a crossing pass through the high slot to Kevin Porter (Northville, Mich.) and Porter ripped a one-time shot home to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after Michigan's fourth power play of the game ended, Hensick skated in alone on Lerg and fooled him with a deke, but Lerg's pad sent the shot away. MSU tied the game 1-1 seconds later at 13:47 on a backhand shot by Tyler Howells.
Michigan rebounded with two opportunities from in close by Brandon Kaleniecki (Livonia, Mich.). David Rohlfs (Northville, Mich.) then netted his first marker of the season at 15:13 to give Michigan a 2-1 lead. Andrew Cogliano (Woodbridge, Ontario) sent a shot in from the top of the right face-off circle and Rohlfs charged the net to bang the rebound out of the air and past Lerg.
Chris Mueller evened the score 2-2 at 16:43. Colton Fetter brought the puck into the crease from behind the net and Mueller skated into the crease and appeared the kick the puck past Sauer, but the play stood following a review for MSU's second goal of the game.
MSU earned its second man advantage at 17:09, but it was Michigan's penalty kill that created the offense, putting Michigan back in the lead 3-2 at 18:28. Tim Miller (Davisburg, Mich.) picked the Spartan defender of the puck at the blue line and backhanded a pass across to a trailing Cogliano, who netted a shot from the left slot. U-M stood tall for the remainder of the kill and goaltender Billy Sauer (Walworth, N.Y.) came up big just after the Michigan man advantage ended, making a save on a MSU chance from the slot on an up-ice rush.
MSU's offensive pressure in the zone late in the period forced a Michigan penalty with just three seconds remaining. Michigan dominated the shot clock in the first, 19-6, but found itself up just one goal heading into the intermission.
The Spartans began the second frame with 1:57 of man-advantage time and went up two men 1:25 into the first following a Cogliano infraction for 33 seconds of two-man advantage time. MSU quickly tied it up 3-3 off the face off on a goal by David Booth at 1:29 of the second period. Booth's shot from the high slot beat Sauer low to the stick side.
Sauer led the Michigan penalty kill early in the second during MSU's 5-on-4 advantage; stoning repeated shots by Spartan forward Justin Abdelkader, helping U-M kill the remainder of the man shortage.
The first penalty call of the second period against the Spartans came at 14:56, giving U-M its fifth man advantage of the game. Kaleniecki put Michigan up 4-3 at 16:12. Johnson sent a soft wrister toward the net from the point that was redirected by Kaleniecki. Lerg could not control the rebound and Kaleniecki poked it under him for U-M's second power-play and third specialty-teams marker of the contest.
Michigan State responded with pressure, but the Michigan defense bent just enough without breaking and went into the second intermission up 4-3. MSU had the shot advantage in the second 10-6.
U-M went up two goals just 36 seconds into the second period. Andrew Ebbett (Vernon, B.C.) skated into the zone along the right boards and sent a backhand saucer across the slot to Kaleniecki, who redirected it home from left of the crease to make the score 5-3.
Michigan earned the first man advantage of the third period at 4:05, but failed to create any offensive output. MSU went up a man at 10:49 for its fifth power play of the night. The Spartans cut the lead to 5-4 at 11:37 on Tyler Howells' second goal of the evening. Mark Mitera (Livonia, Mich.) blocked a point shot and Jim McKenzie ripped a shot wide. Howells grabbed the rebound from off the boards and wristed it in before Sauer could get squared to the shooter.
Miller tripped up a MSU forward to give the Spartans its sixth power play at 14:51 of the final frame. Booth netted his second marker of the game to tie the score at 16:04. Booth took a feed from Tim Crowder and ripped one high past Sauer to move the score to 5-5.
Hensick nearly gave Michigan the advantage late on a turn around shot with less than a minute to go, but Lerg snared it out of the air. Kolarik another great chance in close with just under 30 seconds to play but Lerg blockered it away.
Michigan State had the first good scoring opportuinity of the overtime period as Abdelkader skated in alone, but Sauer blocked away his slapper. Sauer made two more saves before covering.
Porter was roughed with 59 seconds remaining in overtime to give Michigan a short 5-on-4 power play. Kolarik's chance with 20 seconds to play from inside the faceoff circle nearly gave Michigan the win, but Lerg got an arm on it before it crossed the goal line. For the second straight night, the two teams finished the game tied.
