ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan wrestling built an early lead and held on to claim a 22-15 victory over 16th-ranked Northwestern on Saturday evening (Jan. 28) in front of 881 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines won six individual bouts and, adding to their season-opening win over Penn State in November, improved to 2-0 in Big Ten Conference action.
After a Wildcat win at 125 pounds, senior/junior Mark Moos (Lorain, Ohio/St. Edward HS) put U-M ahead for good in the subsequent bout, earning a fast fall against Daniel Quintela at 133 pounds. Moos, ranked 12th by NWCA/InterMat, took immediate control with a takedown just seconds in and locked up the cradle to roll Quintela to his back, ending the match at the 0:32 mark. Moos' victory was the first of five in a row for the Wolverines.
Junior/sophomore Josh Churella (Northville, Mich./Novi HS) was victorious in the marquee match of the evening, using a strong third period to earn an 8-4 decision against sixth-ranked Ryan Lang. Churella, ranked fifth, trailed early in the match, giving up a single-leg midway through the opening period, but rallied with a quick reversal in the second and a pair of third-period takedowns. It was a good start in a busy weekend for Churella; tomorrow, he will face Michigan State's fourth-ranked Andy Simmons.
Junior/sophomore Eric Tannenbaum (Naperville, Ill./North HS) controlled from his feet throughout his 149-pound match against the Wildcats' Jimmy Kim, earning six takedowns en route to a 15-4 win. It was Tannenbaum's fifth major-decision victory of the season, giving him a share of the Wolverines' team lead.
Battling through a funky third period at 157 pounds, junior/sophomore Jeff Marsh (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) needed overtime to beat Greg Hagel but persevered to pick up his first collegiate dual victory in a 7-5 decision. After an escape and a spin-around takedown in the second period, Marsh led by three points heading into the final frame, but in a seemingly two-minute flurry of reversals and exactly 1:00 of riding-time advantage for Hagel, the bout was pushed into the sudden victory. Marsh capitilized on a bad shot by Hagel, countering the single-leg attempt to scramble for the deciding takedown.
Fifth-year senior captains Ryan Churella (Northville, Mich./Novi HS) and Greg Wagner (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider HS) were the lone Wolverines to earn wins after the halftime intermission as Northwestern cut the gap down to four points entering Wagner's final bout of the contest. Both U-M captains produced the only offense in their matches as Churella scored two takedowns and accumulated 4:10 in riding time to cruise past 19th-ranked Will Durkee 6-1 and Wagner tallied an escape and 2:38 in riding time to beat ninth-ranked Dustin Fox.
Michigan (10-2, 2-0 Big Ten) will return to the mat tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 29) for a 2 p.m. dual meet against intrastate rival Michigan State at Cliff Keen Arena.
