Wolverines Fall Nine Points Shy in Michigan Invitational
1/14/2006 12:00:00 AM | Women's Swimming & Diving
Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) won three events, while Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich.) collected two top finishes. Ellen Van Cleve (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Elyse Lee (Albion, Mich.) went 1-2 in the three-meter diving during the morning session to help Michigan take a lead at the break.
Michigan looked to be in control of the meet during the second day of competition, winning five out of eight events in the morning session. The quartet of Hannah Smith (Dexter, Mich.), Valeria Silva (Lima, Peru/Alexander von Humboldt), Brady and Lindsey Smith brought U-M within six points of Notre Dame after a first-place time in the 200-yard medley relay (1:45.32) to start the day.
After Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) earned runner-up in the 400-yard individual medley (4:28.17) to go along with her second-place time in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:03.37) during the second session of the day, the Wolverines took the lead for the remainder of the morning session with three wins in the next four swimming events. Brady collected two wins with top times in the 100-yard butterfly (55.75) and the 100-yard backstroke (55.74), with her 100-backstroke performance being an NCAA consideration time. Lindsey Smith grabbed the other win, clocking in first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.98).
The Wolverines won the only diving event of the day. Van Cleve earned first with a score of 298.50 in the three-meter platform diving, while Lee scored 286.65. U-M's 'A' 800-yard freestyle team (7:38.63) completed the morning with a runner-up finish from the foursome of Lindsey Smith, Abby Seskevics (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven), Payton Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) and Brunemann.
Brady and Lindsey Smith were at it again in the evening session, helping Michigan to its only three wins of the evening. Brady won the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.47) and Smith followed with a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (50.56). Both times eclipsed NCAA consideration standards. Notre Dame surpassed Michigan after U-M failed to place higher than third in the next two events.
Brady and Lindsey Smith, along with Hannah Smith and Seskevics, finished off the meet with a top time in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:25.25). It was not enough, however, as the Wolverines fell just short of a win in their own meet.
U-M returns to the pool next Saturday (Jan. 21) for its final dual meet of the season. Michigan will face Northwestern at 1 p.m. at Canham Natatorium.

Michigan Head Swimming Coach Jim Richardson
On tonight ... "We wrestled to whether we were going to do this meet or not. We decided to go ahead and do it because that is what 'Snik' would have wanted us to do. I think it will serve us good down the road to have done it this week. I think a lot of us were just going through the motions this week, trying to just put one foot in front of the other. That's what you have to do. We will come around with some time, but it's a tough situation and I think we have handled it very, very well."
On tonight's performance ... "We are in the hardest days of our training right now with the dry-land and what we're doing in the water, and it showed with some of our athletes today. They we're a little beat up. They had some trouble finishing races. There are also a couple of people who have been a little beat up that got a little bit better. Overall, I look at what we did last year at this time and how we are swimming this year, particularly two factors. Number one, we are training harder now than we were last year. Number two, what we have been dealing with for the last week and a half. We actually swam a better meet this year than we did last year. A few days from now I will probably feel even better about some of our races. I think we swam some intelligent races because the people who weren't on their 'A' game physically swam 'A' game races in terms of energy. They managed the energy they did have and utilized it intelligently during the races. Hannah Smith did a good job of that in the 100-yard backstroke. Abby Seskevics did a wonderful job of that coming out of the 200-yard individual freestyle and then coming into the relays."

On this weekend ... "I think these last few meets are a good way to practice for the Big Tens and for experience in racing; changing little things in your stroke or other things that can help you in the end. All of us are doing a really good job of that."
On the trip to Puerto Rico on Jan. 3 ... "It definitely helped us in terms of training. We are pretty beat up right now, but this training is going to help us in the end and that is what we keep thinking about. A month from now at Big Tens we will be a lot better than we are right now."
