SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team opened its 2005-06 campaign at the 19th annual Tom Fallon Invitational, held Friday through Sunday (Sept. 23-25) at Notre Dame's Courtney Tennis Center. The three-day event featured eight teams, including five of Michigan's 2005 dual match opponents -- Ball State (Jan. 21), Notre Dame (Feb. 18), Northwestern (Feb. 24), Wisconsin (March 25) and Purdue (April 8). All eight of U-M's players were in action over the weekend, and the Wolverines won 18 of 30 matches in singles competition and went 7-7 in doubles play.
The Wolverines got off to a slow start at the tournament, dropping seven of their first eight singles matches to the host Irish on Friday (Sept. 23). Freshman Scott Bruckmann (Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal School) was the lone victor in the morning session, earning a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Santiago Montoya in his first collegiate match.
Michigan returned to the court later in the day and dominated singles action against Wisconsin, claiming wins on seven of eight courts. Highlighting the afternoon action was junior Brian Hung's (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) victory over No. 80-ranked Jeremy Sonkin, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(5). Three U-M freshmen also collected their first career victories against the Badgers. Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) knocked off Brian Ko, 2-6, 7-6(4), 1-0(7); Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) defeated Nolan Polley, 6-3, 6-4; and Mike DePietro (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) slipped by Gian Hodgson, 6-4, 6-7(6), 1-0(5).
Michigan won five of eight singles matches against players from Northwestern, Notre Dame and Drake on Saturday morning (Sept. 24). Hung and sophomore Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija), who are ranked No. 22 in the ITA preseason national doubles rankings, were unable to upset No. 15 Matt Baccarani and Patrick Thompson of Ball State in the afternoon doubles action, losing 8-3. The Wolverines also lost their three remaining doubles matches to the Cardinals but rebounded to sweep three straight doubles matches against Purdue later in the day.
Michigan wrapped up the competition with five of six singles victories against Army on Sunday (Sept. 25). U-M also took three of four doubles matches from the Black Knights.
The Wolverines will send two players to the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships, held Oct. 3-9 at the University of Tulsa's Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. Junior Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) will start singles qualifying on Monday (Oct. 3), while No. 42-ranked Maravic will begin in the main draw on Thursday (Oct. 6).
