The World University Games, or "Universiade," is an Olympic-style sporting and cultural festival for student-athletes. Approximately 9,000 athletes from 170 countries participate in 14 different sports throughout the competition. The inaugural Universiade took place in Turin, Italy, in 1959 and the Games have been staged in a different city every two years since then. The United States hosted the 17th World University Games in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1993.
Mueller earned an invitation to the World University Games after recording a 10th-place finish (2:16.74) in the 200-yard IM at the 2005 U.S. World Championship Trials on April 1, 2005. During her first season with the Wolverines, Mueller was a two-time NCAA All-America honorable mention and was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships and Freshman of the Year after claiming three individual titles and two relay crowns at the conference meet.
