HONG KONG, China -- University of Michigan junior-to-be Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) represented his native country of Hong Kong at the 2005 Davis Cup, held last Wednesday through Sunday (July 13-17) at the Victoria Park Tennis Centre in Causeway Bay. Competing in Group III of the Asia/Oceania Zone, Hong Kong won all five of its matches during the week to earn a promotion to Group II in 2006. Hung played an instrumental role in his country's success, claiming victories in both of his singles matches and posting a perfect 4-0 doubles record with Martin Sayer.
Hung and his three teammates went undefeated in 15 matches during the competition, earning 3-0 victories over Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Tajikistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Hung knocked off Tajikistan's Dilshod Sharifi 6-0, 6-1 in his first singles match on Friday (July 15), and followed with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Vietnam's Minh-Quan Do on Sunday (July 17). Hung and Sayer, who paired together in all but one match, tallied straight-set wins against each of their opponents. Hung's perfect week moves his all-time Davis Cup record to an impressive 8-1 (2003-05).
Following a pair of Futures events in Beijing and Indonesia at the end of the month, Hung will compete for Hong Kong at the 2005 World University Games, held Aug. 11-21 in Izmir, Turkey.
Hung enters his third year at Michigan with career marks of 43-23 in singles and 36-29 in doubles. He has led the Wolverines in overall singles victories in each of his two seasons at U-M.
