SKILLMAN, N.J. -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced yesterday (Monday, July 18) that University of Michigan junior-to-be Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and graduated seniors Josef Fischer (2002-05) and Michael Rubin (2003-05) were named Scholar-Athletes for the 2004-05 academic year. All three student-athletes are carrying the honor for the first time in their careers.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
Hung, who earned his first Academic All-Big Ten Conference award in 2004-05, led the Wolverines with team-high records of 21-13 in singles and 19-14 in doubles. He finished in a tie for the team lead in dual match singles victories (15-17 at Nos. 1-3) and collected a team-best 12-6 record at No. 1 doubles with sophomore-to-be Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija). Hung, a singles finalist at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships (Oct. 23-26) and a doubles semifinalist with classmate Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) at the ITA National Indoor Championships (Nov. 4-6) last fall, is enrolled in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts.
Fischer collected a 12-9 singles record during his last season at Michigan, including a 7-6 dual match singles mark at Nos. 3-6. U-M's Most Improved Player for 2004-05, Fischer earned a career-high 13-12 doubles record, including a 12-10 dual match mark at Nos. 1-3. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Fischer will graduate with a Bachelor's degree in business administration from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business in 2006.
Rubin, who is also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, tallied a 10-9 singles record during his final year at Michigan before suffering a season-ending wrist injury on March 25. He compiled a 10-5 dual match singles record at Nos. 1 and 2, including a perfect 3-0 mark in the Big Ten. Rubin graduated this past April with a Bachelor's degree in general studies from the College of Literature, Science and the Arts.
