Vozza Claims Title at Michigan Amateur Championship

MUSKEGON, Mich. -- Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist HS), who in 2005-06 will enter his senior season with the University of Michigan men's golf program, posted victories Saturday (June 25) in the semifinals and championship match to win the 94th Michigan Amateur Championship at Muskegon Country Club.
Vozza, the No. 2 seed in the 64-player match play field after shooting 67-71/138 (-4) in the stroke-play qualifying, defeated Patrick Wilkes-Krier, a senior at Ball State, in the final, 5 and 4. Vozza started the round with a pair of bogeys but rebounded with birdies on seven of the next 12 holes to end the match after 14 holes. Earlier in the day Vozza edged Michigan State's Jimmy Chestnut in the semifinal round, 2 and 1.
Former Wolverine Isaac Hinkle (72-75/147) and Michigan coach Andrew Sapp (74-76/150) also advanced to match play after finished 23rd and t-32nd, respectively. After winning his opening round match 5 and 3 against Chad Horner, Hinkle was eliminated in the second round 1up in 20 holes to Bryan Haase. Sapp was eliminated in the first round by Northwestern's Dan Doyle, 2 and 1. If Sapp would have advanced in through the first round, his second round opponent would have been Vozza.
Other Wolverines that participated and failed to qualify for match play were: incoming freshman Bill Rankin, tied for 63rd (73-81/154); redshirt-junior-to-be Brandon Duff, tied for 86th (77-80/157); incoming freshman Nick Pumford, tied for 86th (78-79/157) and sophomore-to-be Brian Ottenweller, tied for110th (84-75/159).
Vozza is the first Wolverine to win the Michigan Amateur since Andy Matthews claimed the 2001 title at Flint Country Club.
