Michigan Places 10th at Big Tens; Vozza Among Top 25

VERONA, Wis. -- The University of Michigan closed out its 2004-05 season with a 10th-place showing today (Sunday, May 8) at the 2005 Big Ten Championships at the University Ridge Golf Course. The Wolverines finished with an 883 54-hole total after posting team rounds of 298, 286 and 299 throughout the three-day tournament.
For the seventh time in 11 tournaments, junior Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist) finished as the top Wolverine as he closed out his conference tournament with a 219 54-hole total, which helped him crack the top 25, as he tied for 24th. After opening with a two-over 74 in the first round, Vozza came through in the second round with his eighth under-par performance as he fired a two-under 70. He closed out with three-over 75 to help him get the top 25 finish.
Fifth-year senior Rob Tighe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) and freshman Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) both closed out the championships tying for 32nd at 221. Tighe had another solid performance as she opened with a one-over 73 in the first round and followed with an even-par 72 in the second. After a few minor miscues he closed out his collegiate career with a four-over 76 and a 221 tally. In his first Big Ten postseason tournament, Schaetzel set a career-best with his 221 total. After opening with a four-over 76, he posed a career-best-tying two-under 70 in the second round. He closed with a three-over 75 to give him the career best mark.
Sophomore Kevin Dore (Dundas, Ontario/St. Mary's) and freshman Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) both tied for 50th with 228 totals. After posting an 81 in the first round, Dore recovered in the next 36 holes as he fired rounds of two-over 75 and one-over 73. Ottenweller opened with back-to-back three-over 75s before closing out with a six-over 78.
Michigan State used a one-over 289 to win its first Big Ten title in 31 years. The Spartans (282-276-289) finished with a 17-under 847 54-hole total, which was five strokes better than runner-up Indiana (283-275-294) who tallied a 12-under 852. Northwestern (294-280-279) was third at 11-under 853.
Indiana and Big Ten Player of the Year Jeff Overton led the conference championship from start to finish and tied the Big Ten 54-hole championship record with a 17-under 199 total. Overton posted back-to-back seven-under 65s before closing out with a three-under 69. Michigan State's Ryan Brehm, who was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, was the runner up with a 13-under 203 total (68-65-70). Michigan State's Matt Harmon (68-67-74) and Northwestern's Kyle Moore (72-71-66) both tied for third at seven-under 209.
The Big Ten Tournament completes the 2004-05 season for the Wolverines.
