ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 2004-05 University of Michigan men's tennis team was honored at its annual postseason banquet, held Saturday afternoon (May 7) at The Original Cottage Inn Restaurant. Michigan's four seniors -- David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola), Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy), Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) -- each had an opportunity to share his thoughts on their college experience in front of family, friends and the U-M tennis community.
In addition to the recognition of the departing seniors, three Wolverines collected individual awards. Freshman Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) was selected as the team's Most Valuable Player, Anving collected the Team Leadership Award, and Fischer was named Most Improved Player. All three awards were voted on by the team members.
Maravic became the first Michigan freshman in eight years to be named to the All-Big Ten Conference team and finished his first season with an overall singles record of 20-14 and a doubles mark of 16-11. He earned a Big Ten-record four Athlete of the Week awards during the 2005 season and teamed with sophomore Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) for a team-best 12-6 record in dual match action at No. 1.
Anving, a 2005 team co-captain, completed his final season with a team-best doubles record of 11-3. He teamed with fellow co-captain Gossain for an 8-3 dual match record at No. 3. Fischer saved his best tennis for his senior campaign, closing out his career with a 12-9 singles record and a career-best doubles record of 13-12.
The Wolverines finished their first season under the direction of head coach Bruce Berque with a 15-10 overall record. U-M placed third in the Big Ten standings at 7-3, its highest finish since 1999, and reached the semifinals of the postseason conference tournament.
