Michigan in 14th Place After Second Day of NCAA Meet

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 17 University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team stands in 10th place with 60 points after the second day of competition (Friday, March 18) at the 2005 NCAA Championships, held at Purdue University's Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The Wolverines earned an All-America finish (200-yard freestyle) and two All-America honorable mention performances (200-yard freestyle, 400-yard individual medley) but were disqualified in finals of the 200-yard medley relay. Georgia claimed three event titles on the second day and remains in first place with 422.5 points.
Sophomore Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) earned Michigan's best individual finish of the championships, touching in at 1:48.01 for eighth place in the 200-yard freestyle. Smith swam the seventh-fastest preliminary time (1:46.93) to qualify for her first career championship final. It marked Smith's second career All-America nomination; she helped the 800-meter freestyle relay team to a seventh-place showing at the 2004 national meet.
For the second straight day, freshman Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS) won the consolation final of an event, clocking in at 4:12.09 for ninth place in the 400-yard IM. Mueller took ninth in the 200-yard IM on Thursday (March 17) with a time of 1:59.07.
Senior Amy McCullough (West Bloomfield, Mich./Mercy HS) notched her seventh career All-America honorable mention finish, touching the wall in 1:47.23 in the 200-yard freestyle for 14th place.
Michigan's 200-yard medley relay team of junior Carolina Sierra (Medellin, Colombia/Colegio Palermo de San Jose), freshman Valeria Silva (Lima, Peru/Alexander von Humboldt), sophomore Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant HS) and Smith qualified for the consolation final with the 13th-fastest preliminary mark of 1:41.52 but was disqualifed in the evening race.
The NCAA Championships will come to an end on Saturday (March 19) at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. Qualifying for the championship's final seven events will begin at 11 a.m., and the finals will start at 7 p.m.

Lindsey Smith earned her third career NCAA All-America award with her eighth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.01). It was Michigans highest NCAA finish in the event since 2003, when Amy McCullough placed sixth. The Wolverines have had nine All-America performances in the event. Smith also swam on U-Ms fifth-place 200-yard freestyle relay on Thursday (March 17) and seventh-place 800-meter freestyle relay team at the 2004 NCAA Championships.
Justine Mueller earned her second career NCAA All-America Honorable Mention award with her ninth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley (4:12.09). It was Michigans highest NCAA finish in the event since 1997, when Anne Kampfe placed third. The Wolverines have had four All-American Honorable Mention performances in the event. Mueller also placed ninth in the 200-yard IM (1:59.07) on Thursday (March 17).
Amy McCullough earned her seventh career NCAA All-America Honroable Mention award with her 14th-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.23). McCullough's career-best finish in the event came during the 2003 championships, when she placed sixth with a time of 1:46.93.
